Gas just one factor in cost of owning a car

"The owners of sport utility vehicles and other gas hogs are feeling particularly squeezed these days. While the cost of filling their tank is going through the roof, the value of their cars is falling fast.

Between March and April of this year, average used-car prices fell 4.5 percent for large SUVs and 5.6 percent for large pickup trucks, according to J.D. Power & Associates. They rose 7.3 percent for compact basic cars such as the Honda Fit, Toyota Yaris or Nissan Versa."

I don't know if this is true or not but when we bought our Prius yesterday the dealer told us that they are not buying large SUVs anymore for the their used car lots. They will take them as trade in, though.

The dealer also said that Carmax isn't accepting the big SUVs because they aren't selling.

If you catch him at a stop light, just ask him if it would be simpler and more direct for him to write

    I AM STUPID!

in the window. Reminds me of those two idiots posing with their Hummer H2 draped in the American flag, with a sign professing their support for the troops. They should have been holding a sign that said, "American soldiers die so I can haul my morbidly fat nice person around in this gas guzzling behemoth".

When we bought our Prius, our salesman said the same thing. Most of the SUV's they take on trade-in are going straight to auction.

He also said he had a guy who wanted to trade in an 06 expedition that he owed 20k on and they would only give him 10k for trade in. Yikes!

Couple of months ago, I got some flak for posting a picture of a parked H2. Over it was a custom sign: "Reserved H2 Parking", and Old Glory flying. No problem with the flag, but the Hummer and the reserved parking sign makes me want to puke....and to think when I posted it some got upset about it.

RVs are also a steal right now, if you are in that market!
Glad I got rid of my Jeep 2 years ago. Not that the Jeep was a gas guzzler of the same magnitude as an H2, but when my fill-up hit $50, I knew it was time to get a Prius!

sooner or later the dealers will refuse to take a suv as trade in at all; or possibly, take a loss on them if accepted at trade in.
the local used car lots near me are full of big trucks and suvs - hundreds of them.
how much are those big tanks worth as scrap metal ? ;)

Our domestic (used) SUV market may only look this bad, but there're channels to these gas hogs for their final resting place.

For people who don't know, lots (or should say piles) of these newly used SUVs can be auction off to the exporters for Middle-East or Russian markets. Gas price is not an issue in these oil-rich regions, only the supply of these SUVs is because our big-3 have no exports to these countries.

So when the dealers only give you half of what your still-new SUVs is worth and claim they are (doing you a favor) by losing money to take it in, you don't need to be grateful. This is because no dealers will ever do any money-losing business.

Yep, when I turned in my leased Honda Pilot, the salesperson said they take them straight to auction. I turned in my Pilot 2 months early and had to pay some over-mileage, but I'm so glad I did because I bought my Prius right before they started getting scarce.

Why is everyone here happy about the death of the american way and the middle class. Who the HELL wants to drive some tinny eco-box around. If you get one inch of snow you get stuck. You cant 4 wheel into the wilderness and camp. You cant do much of anything except be smug.

This forum has a bunch of flippin people who are really full of themselves.

I would say that we have a large percentage of educated people who have a great understanding of the problems we face in the near and projected future and they care enough about other people to want to make a difference. When rights and fun obstruct public health and national security then those "rights" and fun have to take a back seat to responsiblity no? :)

The world is full people ready to knock you down for making any mistake, so I believe there is nothing wrong with patting your self on the back for being smart enough to buy a Prius.

For someone to call the Prius an "Econo box" shows a real lack of understanding as to what the Prius represents, it is far more than an "Econo Box".

I for one am not stuck with driving only a Prius, I also have a Porsche, a full size 4x4 truck, and a mini-van that I am keeping, different vehicles for different jobs.

Part of the perks of being smart and full of yourself is also having enough money to afford whatever you want. But then you probably don't know that.

Anyone who can afford a Hummer doesn't give a damn about burning up fossil fuels. Around here many wealthy people drive cars & SUV's with high HP engines. Yesterday I saw a Dodge car with HEMI badges on the fenders. I wonder how he likes the cost of premium gas. I believe the current Hemi engine makes 425 HP. :)

Because a lot of people are too stupid to realize if we don't go through some pain now and change to more efficient ways, the change will happen say 20 years, but will be major disruptive, chaotic change..

Because the American Way is wasteful like no other with natural resources and that needs to change, pronto.

But then I'm a European living in the US, so I might be biased.

If only there were businesses that allowed you to rent trucks for when U need to Haul things around. It would allow you to save some of your Budget by driving a car most of the time, and only driving a truck when absolutely necessary.

One of the hosts on Top Gear, my favorite show on the BBC, likes to say, "Unlike Americans, Europeans only drive trucks if they're getting paid to do it".

25 years ago, we did not have this ridiculous truck culture all over the US (OK - it's always been in Texas) Thought this 25-year period I've been driving Honda CRXs and Insights with not problem - rent a truck when needed...is that too rational? ;)
