Just put a deposit down on a Prius and am crazily impatient. I've been reading that dealers don't actually order the specific configuration for customers, but just get what they get and try to make a match. This has me a little freaked out as it seems to decrease the odds of my getting a car anytime soon. What's the deal and how long should I expect to wait?

I ordered mine last night and was told it could be "six months, give or take a few months". I'm hoping that the salesman purposely overestimated things so I'll be thrilled when it comes in earlier. He said his sales manager won't give estimates, saying, "Buy another car" because of the long wait. We shall see.

I think each area gets an allotment of Priuses and basically they try and match up cars with who wants what ... of course this is hard to do overall and the largest dealerships will get the best choices generally ... the more specific you are about your options/color/etc the more time it could take. I'm hoping my specifics HELP me get one b/c not many other people would want that combo (Black Touring Pkg 6).

A lot of it will depend on what you will compromise. On June 10, 2006 I "ordered" a silver package 5. The estimate would have delivered the car in early September. A truckload arrived with 3 unsold cars. I rejected 2 out of hand and asked if they would hold the Magnetic Gray for a couple of days. On June 24 I bought the car and am happy I didn't get the higher package.

I ordered a Package 3 on the 22nd. I was told I could get it in as little as four weeks or as much as eight weeks. The salesman suggested I not specify a color, as that could extend the wait time. I can't wait, and I don't care about the color. Good luck to all expectants.

You sound like a kid just before Christmas. Are you sure you're old enough to drive? :):)

Seriously I don't know what I would do in this situation. I bought mine on April 8th, just before the big crunch. The dealer had 10 or 12 on the lot. Only 3 with Package 2, which was what I wanted. White, Silver, and Red. I took the Red. None left today.

I certainly consider myself lucky I moved when I did. All of you have my sympathy. I fear I too would be going crazy.

Maybe we should come up with the top 10 things to do while waiting for a Prius?

    10. sneak the owners manual out of your neighbor's Prius and read it overnight.

You'd better be a fast reader. With the NAV system, there's more than 700 pages of reading, not all of it easy. :)

I spot checked 6 dealer sites in the Chicago-Milwaukee area yesterday. Three wouldn't even LET you search for a Prius!! (it wasn't listed among the other makes) and the others had 1 or 2.

i hear some dealers are selling 2-4k over MSRP. it happened with harleys in the late 90's and if you wanted one you expected to pay several 1000's over msrp...sucks, but thats basic economics of supply and demand

It may be basic economics of supply and demand, but it's also taking advantage of the consumer and it is plain greed. The first time I saw this done was in 1984 and Honda's were selling $1000 over MSRP, I was shocked anyone would do this and was my first experience with it. It left such an impression on me, I have never looked at any Honda since. To pay over MSRP is just perpetuating this practice. Instant gratification definitely has it's price.

hey, i agree, but lets face it, if someone were to offer you say $30 k for your prius, would you sell it?
btw, how do you get photo's etc in your signature?
