I own an 08 Prius and always filling up with 91 rated gas. I heard some of you guys saying that filling up with a low rated gas (87) is better.
Please advice to this. I don't think i can spend more money on high rated gas (91) due to the gas price is going up.

    Thanks

87 is what the engine is designed for. Anything else is a waste of money.

87 is not a "low rated gas" . . . 87 is its octane rating. It does not mean it is inferior gas!

Maybe I should try plugging my computer into the 220 outlet . . . maybe it will go faster.

Or better yet, I think I will put jet fuel in my Prius on its next fill-up . . . because everyone knows jets go faster.

    87. The engine has no issues with 87, so no need to buy a higher octane (my F150 is another story).

    I use 87.
My Passat's owners manual said that it needed Premium because of the Turbo but it still only got 87. lol

87 -- runs great, sounds fine, getting 65 mpg (MFD) now that it's warm.

But at last fill-up, when my usual station had signs on the pumps saying "Up to 10% ethanol," I went to a non-ethanol station & thought I'd better check owners manual & PC gas threads.

Thanks for buying Premium for all this time, helped keep my 87 a bit lower priced by giving the oil companies a bit more profit. Keep buying 91, heck i hear 93 is even better.

I'm willing to bet his BMW gets crappy FE.

The Prius manual says the car should get 87.

Here is a good site for explaining: What Octane Rating of Gasoline Should I Use?

High octane is harder to ignite. It's only purpose is to prevent detonation (pinging) in high compression engines. Prius functions as a lower compression engine and is happy with 87. You are wasting money and increasing emissions by not burning the harder to ignite fuel completely.

I use 85 octane because that's "regular" here in CO. It's an altitude thing. Don't put higher octanes in, like others have said, it's a waste of money. The BMW might get better mileage with higher octane if it's designed to take advantage of the higher compression ratios that are possible with higher octane fuels. It's not because there's more energy in higher octane petrol.

I use 87 for the Prius because that is what it is designed for. My wife has the 1.8T version of the Beetle it is designed for 91 octane gas not because of the turbo but because of the compression. Performance engines need the higher octane so that the gasoline doesn't explode before the piston compresses fully which causes a knock (very bad). I have a Vag-Com for her VW which allows me to see all the readings from the ECU's. 87 octane in it makes the knock sensors go to the very limit of their automatic adjustment.

87 octane is all thats needed. Anything else is a waste.

You guys are all far too kind to the OP, where are the sarcastic questions about using the 'search' function, about how this topic has been discussed repeatedly, about how there's a lot of good info in the owner's manual that came with the car? And then follow up with asking whether one should use dino or synth oil, or how does one disable the reverse beep, or what are the best tires for the Prius? C'mon, fellas, the OP deserves a severe flaming!!
