I'd had my Prius for less than two days before making its first journey into London. I actually work in West London so don't go near the congestion charging zone, but this commute in heavy traffic was the main reason for buying a Prius (as well as not having to use the train and underground!).

25 miles and one hour later, and I saw a scarcely-believable 64.9mpg on the display. It's all about that little EV button though. Too often under a light throttle the Prius starts the engine, but keeping it in electric mode means far greater economy. I wasn't really trying hard either, but with a bit of training - and increased tyre pressures - that figure could still improve.

Coming home I used a different route (mostly motorway/freeway) and still saw 55.4mpg but with a fully charged battery for tomorrow. Must also say the car was fab to drive next to my Audi A3; rides nicely, very light steering and the elevated driving position is just great.

Hi benw123 and welcome to Prius Chat. Nice to hear of another UK drivers experiences with their Prius. That was fantastic mpg on the way in and not too shabby on the way out either. My commute is about 15 miles out and back again each day and I averaged about 47mpg for this, which compared to my A4 Avant was good too (that used to average 35mpg on the same trip).

On my last fill up, I increased the tyre pressure to 42 Front and 40 Rear to see if it made any difference. I haven't yet filled the tank but the MFD is showing 52.7 mpg as at tonight on 300 miles, so I reckon in my instance, the extra tyre pressure is giving me a 10% or 5mpg improvement so far - and this is without any of the other fancy tricks one can do to improve fuel economy.

Do you know if the congestion charge is applicable Mon thru Friday or does it include weekends too. We are travelling down to Chelsea area SW6 to stay with our kids for the weekend (normally go by train) and was wondering if I needed to pay congestion charge on Saturday and Sunday ?

Hi there, thanks for the welcome! Need to get some more UK drivers here as there's few sites in the UK for the Prius.

I've read about increasing the tyre pressures and will do this at the weekend - I can then do back-to-back comparisons next week. I take it if you're in Cambs, your 15-mile commute isn't into London at all?

Regarding the congestion charge, I'm quite sure it only applies Monday thru Friday as you said. We used to visit my sister-in-law who lived in Rotherhythe, and would drive all the way down the A1 and cross at Tower Bridge - but only at weekends. I would check the TfL website (Home | Transport for London) to be sure though!

Thanks for the reply on the congestion charge, I will check their site too. My commute is into and around Peterborough, which has some heavy traffic but flows reasonably well with many roundabouts, although the worst ones are the ones they put traffic lights on, the timing always seems to be contra to the traffic flow. Better than loads of traffic lights though as I can do this trip in about 15 to 20 minutes normally and 30 minutes tops.
