    I liked it, up until the point the lady newscaster somewhat snootily said, "if only we could all drive 55."

    On any hypermiling media coverage placed on the Internet the ensuing viewer comments are always so negative. It's a shame really because instead of viewing people who hypermile as an obstacle to get around, angrily I might add, they should try to take note. It's nothing more than conscious driving. I think most drivers would be surprised at how much they can increase gas mileage on a non-hybrid with mild non-annoying hypermiling.

    I didn't even look at the responses below. More negativity, I'm assuming.

    What really erks me is it's NOT always about having to drive slower to get better mpg. It's about knowing when to step on the appropriate pedal and when not to. The real time mpg consumption screen (at least on my 2002) REALLY lays it out for me how to drive effeciently.

    As a quick example, as the video somewhat explains, is coasting. When driving a normal car, I would tend to stay on the gas while going down a slight decline and often speed up a few miles per hour. But I found out this wastes a lot of gas. When watching the energy screen, my mpg in the Prius can just sit at about 30mpg if I stay on the gas. If I let off the gas (but not engage regenerative braking), I can either maintain my speed or worst case scenario decelerate a few mph but the mpg spikes at 100mpg.

    It really isn't about "only" driving 55 in a 65 or 70mph zone. It's about being more aware of how one's driving habits and one's environment (road conditions, weather, etc...) affect your fuel economy. Getting better fuel economy doesn't just mean you have to drive slow as the simplistic comment of the newscaster makes it sound. The Prius makes it easier to figure out the ways to better fuel economy than a "normal" car because it gives real-time mpg AND shuts the engine off or mostly off when not needed.

    I don't think that guy knew what he was doing. There is no need for the N switch at lights in the prius. I get better gas mileage than him and I don't hyperdrive. I pulse and glide. and even when I don't pulse and glide and I have to race to get somewhere like a softball game or something I still get better than 48 mpg. He is proof that if you baby the car and drive slow trying to increase fuel efficiancy you will acually achieve the opposite.
    Oh and the BIT#$ thought she was making a funny, News reporters suck!

    My wife consistently gets 49-50 mpg and she doesn't really hypermile. Since most of her commute is on the freeway, the only thing she really pays attention is getting the engine to the point where it uses no battery on the freeway.

    I think the shifting to N might have been an editing trick. He could have been coasting or at a stop and shift to N just so they could get footage of it.

    hmm... You have all seemed to be misquoting the Newscaster.. she said "If everyone would drive 55, then we'd be talking about something" I didn't take that as negative at all. Seemed she was agreeing and wishing everyone would use some of these techniques.

    I do, however, agree that the guy featured didn't really know how to do it!! Lol.. he lives in warm San Diego and only gets 47mpg? He should be getting WAY higher if he's really hypermiling.

    hmm... I actually didn't misquote it. I watched it twice. That's what she originally said... I just watched the video again and now it's different.

    Do you mean different as in they edited what she said or different as in they are now playing a different video? Because I just tried to watch it and it is a video about some criminal that robbed a bank.
