I purchased a pair of ADS 246ix speakers on Ebay the other day. I paid $125. For a first step was to replace the tweeters. After pulling off the existing tweeter support bracket, the tweeters just popped out. I used a utility knife to trim out some of the plastic, since the new tweeters were a little bit bigger. I was able to trim it just enough, but keep some of the plastic tweeter retaining clips, so the new tweeter snapped in and is retained securely without any additional screws or anything.

I changed out one tweeter and then listened to the difference in the sound. Using the left right balance control I compared the sound of the existing and new tweeters. Wow! the new tweeters make a huge difference. The tweeters are 1" silk dome tweeters.

I definately recommend changing out the tweeters. It is a simple DIY job that yields a great improvement in sound.

I wanted silk dome tweeters because they are supposed to sound great without being too harsh or overly bright. I hear that the infinity Kappa tweeters are often considered to be too bright. These ADS silk dome tweeters brightened up the highs without being overly harsh. I got lucky.

I will replace the drivers in the door at some point, but I want to install sound dampening at the same time, so it will be a bigger job.

Thanks for the info. I bought a pair of 346cs for my Subaru a few weeks ago and then after reading this I bought the 246ix's for our Prius. The have the same tweet as the 346cs's so I'm looking forward to them!

Tweets definitely made a big improvement. I rank tweeter upgrades right up there with the sub-woofer. I only had time to do the tweets when I got my Focals, but the improvement was absolutely amazing compared to the Infinity tweets. I changed the woofers after a few weeks, and then the system achieved near-nirvana quality. The woofers didn't make as much of an impact as the tweeters, though.

    Hey there Presto,

Are you running your Focals off the jbl amp? I've done a lot of reading and it seems most people going for SQ use the jl ssi and cleansweep, then into an amp. I figure I'm going to try bi-amping my a/d/s's using the hi-pass output for the fronts into the tweets and the rears into the lo-pass. That way I can also use fading to gain some control over tweeter/mid outputs. What did you do?

    Heya Jonas,

Initially, I was doing the bi-amp thing with my Infinitys (605cs) on the A7 amp. I had the tweets on the hi-pass output at 3.5khz and the woofers were 80Hz - 3.5khz. I had first installed the Infinitys using the stock crossover, but found the tweeters too harsh even at the -3db setting. With the tweets on their own channel, I was able to turn the gain down compared to the woofers and that smoothed things out significantly. The Focals are using the included crossovers, and the tweeters are incredible. They are not harsh even when the volume is cranked right up.

Ok, so i'm still a little confused. Is the A7 amp the stock jbl amp or did you install an aftermarket amp?
I was thinking of running the tweets from the jbl amp front hi-pass into the included crossover and running the woofers from the rear signal into the included crossover. Then I can use the 0,+,-3db setting on the crossover AND front/rear fader for output control. I don't mind installing an aftermarket amp but I prefer to keep things as simple as possible!

Sorry I'm not gettin' it

Sorry for not being clear, Jonas. Before I even took delivery of the Prius, I knew I wasn't going to utilize the JBL amp since I'm accustomed to my aftermarket goodies.

I, personally, would not tap into the front outputs on the JBL due to the internal crossover that splits the front output to the tweeters and woofer right at the amp. If you do utilize the JBL front channels, you can just connect the A/D/S tweeter directly to the JBL's front tweeter output, and then connect the rear JBL output through the A/D/S crossover for the woofers. It's worth a go, if you don't want aftermarket amps. I'm just not certain of how well that would sound.

thanks for clairifying. It's not that I mind installing after market amps (I just took delivery on some a/d/s 346cs's and an alpine mrp-f450 for our subaru!) its just that I like to do things the simplest AND cheapest way possible. I'm also torn between doing the jl dps/ssi setup or waiting it out a little longer for the new Alpine processor.

It looks like it does a similar job as JL but adds phase shift and timinig!

I'll probably try the factory amp for a month or two, until I can't take it any more and then install the above wiht a new amp!

    Jonas.

Hi group, I have a question regarding the tweeter assembly: during removing the assembly at home (to upgrade tweeters), I lost one of the metal retaining clips at the top of the assembly that snaps it back in place on the door (I know, stupid move). Is there any way to order or replace that small metal part without having to buy a complete new plastic assembly?

If you know what metal part i'm talking about and have any advice, i'd appreciate it! Thanks, Farrell

92 cents from Toyota for the tweeter bezel clips.
