Yeah, I understand the the SKS system has a short range with the car, my beef is the remote being used a clicker to lock and unlock the car from a distance. I have read from a couple of members that have the non SKS remote and there range for using the remote fob to lock and unlock seems to be larger. I also don't think that it is a design issue. The Prius remote fob is larger than the Lexus SKS remote fob, my IS250's remote worked over a long range, in regard to lock and unlock remote fob. But then again, the new smaller design of the Lexus SKS remote came out in the 2006 model range, as apposed to the current Prius SKS remote that came out in 2004 model year.

This brings up another scenario.... you are in a restaurant eating, just on the other side of the wall (less than 10 feet away) is your car in the parking lot. The teenage druggie tries your door handle and "beep", your car unlocks and he steals anything he thinks he can get a couple dollars for. And if he's not too drugged out, he hits the start button and it fires up! Think this is possible? :(

I doubt it, just for the fact that my SKS remote will only work about 3 feet from the handle. Also I don't think the car would start up since the key isn't in the car.

From what I understand of the SKS system, there are multiple antennas positioned in various body panels and the SKS system is not only able to DETECT the key fob, but also to determine the exact POSITION of the key fob. In doing so, it is able to determine whether the key is inside or outside the car. Try it. Leave a key fob inside the car, get out and try to lock the door by pressing the black lock button on the door. The SKS system determines that you've left your key in the car and refuses to lock the door. Now try getting back in, starting the engine, and then stepping outside the car with the key fob in your pocket. As soon as you step outside of the vehicle, you get the 3 beeps that warns you that you've left the car running and there is no key inside.

The door should only unlock if a key fob is detected within 3 feet or less of that particular door. Also the engine will not start unless the key fob is detected as being INSIDE the vehicle.

My 2007 Prius fob only has a vary short range also, but I just bought a 2008 Camry Hybrid, also with the smart key, and that fob works from a LONG way away. I think it is just the Prius. Every remote I've ever had works a lot farther away than the Prius remote
