I have now been misidentified twice as a liberal because of the car I drive.

The first time while parking the Prius at my polling place. Some random guy said, “nice car, now let’s go vote the bum out of office.â€

The second time was last week. I parked in front of another car which was also in the process of parking. We were both heading into the lobby of the local (and liberal) newspaper here in Sacramento. She said, “I really like your car . . . are you going to go to the Inauguration rally downtown tomorrow?†. . . it was a protest rally!

I guess my wife’s UC Berkeley Alumni license frame on the back doesn’t help either.

This really has me curious. What is the political makeup of Prii drivers?

    8) Sufferin' Prius Envy,

I am proud to say that I am very conservative, a Republican, and in my profession not very many Liberals either.

LIbertarian right here. IMO, the Republican party has lost touch with their roots - limited government, limited spending, low taxes, balanced budgets, and cutting government waste.

These days, it's spend the peasants money like a collection of drunken gamblers from BOTH parties.

Ever take one of those short "what are you?" political spectrum tests?

I have a strong libertarian, states rights free market belief system that is coupled with social conservatism and fiscal conservatism.

Those tests show me as some middle of the roader, but the problem with these tests is that they are all framed from a liberals views of conservatives.

I don't trust the government or whoever is in power, that is a conservative belief system but liberals presume that conservatives put blind faith in candidates and officeholders we support like they do. This is not so, we are supporting them with a wary eye. We are critical of them even when supporting them. We agree with none of them 100% because we just don't trust government, we trust ourselves individually.

Socialists (liberals) trust government and distrust individual decision making, which is why you hear statements from socialists like Clinton in which he actually said "we would give you (workers) a tax cut but we don't know if you will spend it right.

Of course, government knows best, I should give them all my money!

I don't want the feds involved with abortion in any shape form or fashion, so do I support some anti abortion amendment? No. I don't want DC domestic policy solutions, give that to the states. Let the free market compete in domestic policy in the 50 states.

As far as the libertarian streak, you can lie in the gutter and I will condemn you but I don't want the government to rescue you from your decision. If you want to drink yourself to death in the comfort of your home, go right ahead, I shall defend your right to do something I shall condemn. Not every non government regulated or prohibieted activity should be celebrated or applauded. Get AIDS from attending chase the bug parties and I say you got what was coming to you. And if the voters of that state say you ought to go to jail for having sex while HIV positive, so be it.

I am a true conservative, the kind the nation was founded upon.

I'm not answering the poll because I think the terminology is inadequate to express my political views.

Conservative Republican, strong believer in crucial power of freedom and liberty, single driving force to which every other aspect of human experience is secondary. Belief that comes from the experience of growing up in communist country and knowing first hand how it feels not to have it. To me, these two words are anything but empty phrases.

That all translates into one single definition - I love USA, it's history, it's people and it's determination to be the beacon of freedom on the top of the hill, never hesitant to bring even the ultimate sacrifice to the idea of promoting liberty around the world - then and now. Never mind that some fail to see it at times, the history will be the best judge, as it always was.

But I'm also Conservative Republican who does not believe in God (agnostic), is strong environmentalist (tree hugger), believes that access to health care is basic human right and still believes that original idea of socialism does have a merit.

    Go figure :)

I find it outrageous when people insinuate that I'm a hard-core environmentalist. I'm not what I consider "hard core". But all the same, I like to tell them that God told me to stop ruining his Earth. I mean, seriously, God worked hard to seperate the chaos from the order, the light from the dark, the land from the sea. He even took a day to create all the animals. And here we are destroying all of God's creation. I would like to find someone who says they respect God but not God's creation.

I nominate you to teach the next "Leave No Trace" outdoor impact class for my son's scout troop. Best post I have read from you, bar none.

The selection of political choices is extremely narrow. Since I endorse only honesty and intelligence that leaves only that ancient impossible science of government that the wisest should rule... 8) .... Integrity.

When I thought up this poll, I certainly wasn’t trying to make it all encompassing - and thus one of those political spectrum tests Robert Taylor referred to. My point is just to get overall Left, Center, Right percentages for the average Prius owner. For that, it is up to you, the individual, to pigeonhole yourself. I’m proud of all you PriusChat contributors for not using this string as a mud slinging exercise. That is so not it’s intent.

(I just wish this poll showed up on the main PriusChat page to get a better representation . . . those who avoid eating pancakes at FHOP.)

Which is to say you are one thoroughly confused individual.

I pigeonholed myself as 'very liberal' though I'm not really strongly political. I do have a strong belief in the essential equality of all human beings, which is clearly not a conservative/Republican viewpoint. I have an interest in maintaining our environment, because, well... we live in it and it's stupid not to care about it. Again, this is not a conservative/Republican viewpoint.

    Political makeup? (Sorry... can't resist...)

Max Factor! Nixon lost the 1960 debate without it.

I understand Daniel's opinion above. The only time someone should value my group identity more than my individuality is when they are trying to sell me something. I have the freedom to be indescribable.

    Re: Define: "Conservative" vs. "Liberal"

The terms have been co-opted and are now very ambiguous.

"Conservative" =Least cost, end use or long-term (Promethian ethics)
"Liberal" = Least cost, first use or short-term (little or no concern for consequences)

The above definitions are in direct contrast to how the terms are kicked around by various political groups. The above definitions apply in cases of moral, fiscal, economic, social, ecological and other situations.

You're right about the rather odd use of such terms as "conservative" and "liberal" in the U.S. And since this board does have international participation, perhaps the OP should have been more careful about defining his terms. How about these (admittedly imperfect) categories:

American Libertarian nut case (Market = God)

American Right-Wing Republican (Market = Saint)

American Moderate Republican (Market = Best Friend, but even your best friend needs to be told "no" now and then)

American Moderate Democrat (Market = Best Friend, but even your best friend needs to be told "no" now and then)

American Left-Wing Democrat (Gays, Lesbians, People of Color, and other downtrodden groups need better treatment in the Market, which is our Good Friend, but who is nevertheless something of a f**k-up and needs constant watching)

American Left-Wing Progressive lower-case-d democrat (Market is anti-democratic force that exacerbates inequality and poverty, endangers democracy, and rapes the environment; under no circumstances should such things as human beings ("labor") and our ecological system be entrusted to its destructive influences)

American Clod (spends all his/her time watching TV and spends life in the thick fog of trivia; this is the majority of American society)

Well my conservative credentials are impeccable as a graduate of Hillsdale College but as one of the few Young Democrats in 1970 graduating class I guess that makes me a centrist. With all of that I am also a GDI. I hate the left and the right. I do dislike anyone who is unwilling to talk and compromise their positions. I guess I see too much of a lack of compromise in our House and Senate.
