How much did a Prius go for before the huge demand?

I'm looking to buy a used 2004 Prius...but of course, the prices on both used and new Priuses have skyrocketed because of high demand. However, I don't have much context. How much was the average 2004 Prius before the price hikes?

    Prius prices

A lot of dealers are selling 2004 Prii for at or below sticker. I went to three dealers in the Denver area before buying mine and all three were at or below. I paid $250 below sticker for a package #7.

I do know that there is a dealer in Denver selling used 2004 Prii (with about 10,000 miles) for $30,750, but they will sell you a new one for sticker. The difference is when you will get the car (now versus maybe 2 years from now according to them).

I got my 9 in November, 2003 and at that time the base price was $19,995 and I paid $25+ for the loaded version.

As long as people can control their "I want it NOW" instant gratification problems, this dealer will have the car until he drops the price to something reasonable, and that would be below MSRP.

I got my Pioneer Ordered BC (#3 Pioneer Package, #9 for 2004, #6 for 2005, whatever) Tideland for well under MSRP - but that's when the dealers had no idea that there would be near zero supply and seemingly infinite demand.

Bookrats, it didn't even rain in the DC area from Charley. The eastern shore got a fair amount of rain, but not much more than most of our summer storms.

As of June 2008, it is unlikely you will pay any less than sticker-at least in Arizona, because of simple supply and demand laws. In fact we are selling them "off the truck" meaning that by the time each shipment arrives they have generally been sold and contracted a week or two before. Most customers are thus willing to pay full sticker or more to get one of the limited number of priuses from the bimonthly allocation. Moreover, they miss out daily on the savings from better gas mileage as gas prices continue to climb. As a Toyota consultant at the #1 Toyota store in AZ, we are fortunate just to have a steady supply of them as some dealers are practically sold out entirely.

Thanks for reviving this antique (2004) thread.

Todays Prius buyers will see that we are just in another high demand cycle.

For those of you who were not around then, my Prius cost $19,500 after a 4 month wait on several dealers lists. Todays Kelly BB shows a suggested retail of $18,470. Not bad depreciation!!

seasalsa - that's awesome. only 1k in depreciation over a 4 year period. how many miles do you have on it now? is it ok to buy a used 2005 with 60k miles on it?

i'm honestly thinking about picking one of these prii up due to the fuel savings. i currently spend 6k a year on fuel and my car gets 21mpg and 22 when it feels lucky.

i'm pretty sure that the fuel savings will be able to pay for the car itself allowing me to convert funds for consumable resources into an actual asset (i only say asset because of the relatively flat depreciation rate).

I have about 65k on my car now. I would not hesitate to buy an 05 if you know it's history. Just be careful of flood damaged and salvage cars.

My prius has only been to the dealers for recall service. Most of the recalls were on the 04, they got most of the early kinks out by 05.

I just made a 400 mile trip averaging 49.6 MPG driving normally.

When I decided to purchase mine, I went to Carmax in Laurel, MD and got a '08 package #6 for $25,868 + TTL. They gave me $20,500 for my '06 4-Runner. So, I left the dealer in pretty good shape on that deal. A week later, the waiting list started. I did have to wait about two weeks for mine. I guess my timing was just about right.

    I've got a brand new 2008 #4 with only 2500 miles on it...first $50K takes it:rofl:

But seriously, before the market went crazy you could have gotten a Prius for much less than MSRP, all the way down to the invoice price or even less according to several posts I've seen.

I paid 21,800 for my stock '05 Prius. Now have 105,232 miles. Still going strong.
