Fuel Comsumption Screen?

    Has anybody been double checking the average fuel consumption reading on the touch screen? Mine has been giving a steady reading of around 53-55. I checked my mpg the old fashion way by dividing the odometer reading into the amount of gas I pumped into the car and I am actually getting around 57-58 mpg. This is based on two fill ups. I am still under 1000 miles on my 2008.

    Yeah, we just did the same thing. Apparantly, when you are coasting or not using any gas, the highest mpg you can achieve according to the Prius is 99.9 mpg, when in fact you are achieving more. So that is great! Still not getting the mpg you are. My husband says I've gotta learn how to drive.

    I've tracked the difference between displayed MPG and calculated MPG for several months. The overall difference is 2.3%, with the display on the high side. Others who have done the same report similar differences.

    Because of the Prius' flexible fuel bladder, tank-to-tank differences can vary significantly. I've seen up to a 15% difference in one tank.

    I only have 4500 miles. I always check the pump vs MFD after a fill up. It has always been +/- 1.5 - 2 MPG off. But averaging in the low 50 MPG range I have nothing to complain about.

    the MFD says 99.9MPG, but with a scangaugeII it shows higher.

    my thinking is that the MFD is limited to the XX.X

    Are you resetting the mpg when you fill up? If you don't reset it you are seeing the lifetime mpg on the screen and not the mpg for that tank of gas.

    Are you resetting the MFD after each fill up or just letting it ride? You'll see very little variation in the MPG if you don't reset each tank...what you're looking at is a lifetime MPG.

    Ah! no I have not, although I have only filled up twice that is a good point. I will reset it and see if that makes a difference.

    After 146,000+ miles and 402 tanks of fuel I can agree with the display being 2.3% above the calculated mileage is pretty close.

    I've averaged about 41.38209 MPG on the display and 40.61765 MPG calculated, with a difference of .... 1.84727%.

    Lots of high speed highway miles and motorcycle trailering.
