Will the Volvo airbags and sensors work in the Prius?

What will the seats cost installed?

I am looking at purchasing a Prius and love the idea of driving one - only problem - that darn seat! I drove the Prius for about 30 minutes and my back was spasming! I do have a previous back injury and need an adjustable seat with lumbar support - I saw that someone was going to try putting heated volvo seats w/lumbar supports in his - anyone know if this worked? I would gladly pay the price for the seats for the comfort!

    Thanks

So is this the end of the short Toyota era?

They have so little regard for us, the owners, that they intentionally put a junky seat in their car because it is a "lower model" and they want to move us up to a "higher model?"

This whole retail model hasn't worked out so well for GM.

Its funny that Toyota puts height adjustable seats on the cheaper Corolla but not on the Prius. When I bought my car I had a good talk with the salesman, who had been selling Toyotas since the early 90s, and he said that was one point that everybody complained about the Prius Gen II, and that the dealers constantly tell Toyota about this. He mentioned he is amazed that Toyota hasn't fixed it, as it's readily available overseas and that Toyota usually listens to their dealers when it comes to customers complaints about their cars. I wonder who at Toyota USA is keeping the height adjust away from US shores?

Thanks a hundred from all of us tall "dwarfs" - at 5"8' I hit the roof with the seat all the way back. If I slouch enough to see my back can't tolerate it.

I drove my last car with hand controls so that I could put the seat way back and see out the windshield, but there is no room for hand controls in this that I can see, plus, the seat is already all the way back.

Kudos - I've printed this out and will take it to mobility.com

i'm 6'5" and my head dosen't hit the ceiling, even when i sit basically straight up (i just can't see out the top of the windshield)

has anyone ordered a "passenger" seat from overseas with the 6 axis and tried to install it?

Perhaps US regulators (backed by oil companies) got to look at Toyota specs and twisted arms to make the car less attractive.

I could see big oil buying stake in the company(ies) supplying batteries for the Prius, restricting ouput. They did it before, buying stake in Ovonics to help stamp out electric vehicle success.

Got your tin foil hat on?
Toyota has their own battery company (Panasonic), likely to specifically avoid that issue.

Re: Finally, I've got a height adjustable driver's seat

After looking over the PDF, I've got to wonder - was it not possible to just transfer the entire Prius seat back to the Corolla seat bottom? It seems that would be easier than transferring the headrest/airbag across.

I'll probably find out myself in the next few weeks by finding an 05-06 Corolla seat and measuring it, but if you have details on why it didn't work, I'd appreciate hearing them.

Re: Finally, I've got a height adjustable driver's seat

    Talonts,
I wish it was as easy as swapping the seat backs. But, according to my evaluation of the hinge point and seat back spring, this all appeared to be a welded and stamp assembled group of parts. I couldn't see an elegant way of cutting/disassembling the seats at the hinge point, so I opted for the method I described in my PDF document ( http://www.box.net/shared/9dc62z6acc ).

If you find as easier way, I'll be the first to congratulate you!

Good thing you don't have to ride in the back seat, you would get a mohawk haircut. I am 5'10" and I got claustrophobia in the back of the 2010.

Well, since this thread came back up ....

naterprius asked, "does the seat sit any further back now that you are done?"

    Solar_Powered
"No, the retrofitted height-adjustable seat mounts exactly to the floor as the original Prius seat, so there is no additional leg room as a side benefit."

    ----------------
    I agree.

I have an 08 Prius with white leather seats. Can you please show me how you change out the seat? :(

Re: Finally, I've got a height adjustable driver's seat

Today I'm the one to dig up an old thread, but for a reason...

I've been looking through Solar_Powered's .pdf document on how to meld a Corolla and Prius seat. It looks very doable.

Yesterday I drove 55 miles to check out a Corolla seat at the junkyard I bought my 06 Prius seat at. The seat adjusted fine while in the car, but unfortunately, the lower frame near the rails was a little bent, so I had to walk away empty handed.

Later I used a site www.car-part.com to locate Corolla seats in CA. I took a shot with a large chain dismantler named www.specializedpartsplanet.com to have an 05 Corolla LH gray seat shipped in this week. I'll see if 'you get what you pay for'. The seat was priced at $75 which is low for a used seat, $131 with shipping. We'll see if the saleman's claim that it is underpriced and that 'he'd put it in his car' rings true.

It's a little exciting 'cause I know I can do this project. I will have extender braces welded on so the seat will height adjust and slide back farther than stock seats.

It's great to see people doing this. The seats, in the 3 Prius I've rented, are among the leading barriers to my plunking down the cash for a Prius. I've been driving Saabs for 25 years and my back has a certain set of expectations for seating comfort. Plus, we do some long trips, and Toyota seems to have no idea of how to make a decent seat for a 6'2" male. Recaros are a pricey option, but cheaper than back surgery!

Lots of discussion of what's wrong with the Prius II front seats, but I have yet to find an enthusiastic post for a solution... any followup to this thread with info on upgrading the Prius II (horrid) bucket seats?

Am about to purchase a 2007 Prius and know this will be the one big negative: driver comfort...

I dislike the Prius seat, just too uncomfortable for me. Any suggestions for a replacement? My legs start to fall asleep like sitting on the throne for too long.

    thanks

Re: Finally, I've got a height adjustable driver's seat

the Australian Prius comes with a height adjuster, pictured here
    [IMG]

having just had mine through its 90,000km service I had a Corolla as a loan car for the day. While the two height adjusters look identical I must say the adjustment range on the Corolla was much greater than mine at around 3", and the Prius seating position felt quite high in comparison at any position.

The Corolla seats themselves (possibly a later model than my 2008) had more side bolster, and possibly a little more comfortable, but not a lot as they felt quite firm rather like 70's era Volkswagen Beetle seats. The ride quality of the car was positively agricultural compared with Prius.

So if firm seats suit you, and more height adjustment is all you are looking for the Corolla may well be a good fit for you.

Myself I shall keep looking, and I shall be seeking softer seats with more adjustment range in height and incline. Also the backrest positioning is rather crude being limited to notches, where other seats have more infinite control.
