    First of all, publicly posting this idea means you should never do it.

    Second, I am not a lawyer, but it may be legal if you did it accidentally. If you did it on purpose, there are many laws you may have broken.

    Third, your insurance company may decide not to pay. Want to sue them ? Go ahead and good luck with that... :)

    Fourth, insurance companies are supposed topay "fair market value" for your car. If fair market value is down severely, that's fine with them...

    Fifth, if you have a conscience, consider listening to it... :)
