    Hi All,

Uh oh. My 2001 Prius with about 50 K miles is now displaying the check engine light. I pulled the trouble codes with a borrowed ScanGaugeII and found only P0000, so reset the code. Three days later, it's returned. Still only shows P0000, which I've seen described as last trouble code and general problem code, but nothing specific to the Prius. The second time, it must have come up right after a cold start.

    Freeze frame data is:
    PID 02=0000, PID05=3F, PID 06=80, PID 07=7E, PID 0C=0A0E RPM=1359, PID 0F=46 85 Degress F, PID 0D=0 0 MPH, PID 04=65 LOD=39, and PID 03=0100 Loop is open.

There is no obvious problem. Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Thanks. Yes, I've seen this and am wondering if whatever caused the check engine light did not produce a trouble code, or at least not a drive train trouble code. The ScanGauge II did say there was one trouble code and then displayed the P0000.

When the check engine light comes on, usually a DTC will be produced by the engine ECU. Since the ScanGauge cannot pick up the code, perhaps you might try borrowing (or buying) a code reader from your local discount parts store; or else ask your Toyota dealer to retrieve the code.

Thanks, Patrick. I'm in the process of choosing a PC based OBD II scanner, so that may take care of it. It is puzzling, though, that the ScanGauge II can read the last code (P000), if that's what it is, but not the actual trouble code.

Is it a common occurrence that a particular scanner will fail on the Prius?

Dec. 1, 2009 My 2004 Prius just gave me the same "Check Engine" light and my Scan Guage (w/Xguage) shows scan code P0000. So if the Scan Guage isn't showing me the correct code what good is it for scan codes? Have others received fake codes from their Scan Guages?

Dec. 1, 2009 Just contacted Scan Guage and they say the scan guage caused the P0000 code meaning there is no code. They said it's a software glitch and I should upgrade to version 3.17. When I called back after checking my guage and finding out it was already at 3.17 I called them back. They had nothing more to say. Not very helpful.

I looked at the link in this thread for MiniScanner and it sounds like it provides the kind of information I expected to get from the Scan Guage. I will research if they are the same company, same product but updated for the 2004-2009 Prius. This new ScanGuageII, which I own, doesn't give any information about the HV battery system.

The Ecrostech miniscanner is designed specifically for the 2001-2003 model year Prius. It will not work with newer Prius.

The ScanGaugeII, having been designed to work with most vehicles, really will not help with Prius DTC.

Suggest that you try visiting a local discount auto parts store to see if they can read a code using a reader that is compliant with Toyota CAN. Otherwise, try your local Toyota dealer. Good luck.

    Patrick,

Can you tell me if a standard OBDII scanner can read the Prius DTC or does it specifically have to be Toyota CAN compliant?

    Hi Dwight,

Must be Toyota CAN compliant. Even then, there's no guarantee that the code reader will pick up all DTC logged by the Prius multiple ECUs.

FYI - the problem that generated the P000 code for me back in 2008 turned out to be the result of mice carrying away a section of wire harness on top of the gas tank that carried power to and signals from the evaporative control system. It's been awhile, but I believe that I did finally see some relevant codes when I got a CAN compliant OBD-II USB scanner. It took some doing to figure it out even then, since access was very tough.

Well, my last P0000 was 12-01-2009 and today 3-09-2010 it did it again. Since 12-01 I've had the hybrid battery replaced ($2980) and an oil change. The Scanguage read the code and I'm going to clear it using the scanguage. We'll, see what happens from there.

The Prius is a fun car to drive but a frustrating car to fix. This from the mouth of an Electrical Design Engineer, LOL.
