My wife's 92 Previa is about due for a replacement.

We've been waiting for Toyota to expand their hybrid line but I haven't heard any news about it recently.

She thinking about a Rav4 but it's not available as a hybrid.

There used to be a Rav4 EV but you'd have to find a used one and it will cost you a LOT more than a new ICE Rav4.

Right now the only hybrids in Toyota's line are the Prius, Camry and Highlander. The Prius has a pretty big hatch for cargo. Will that due for her?

Toyota will be bring out two new hybrids this fall. One will be a Toyota, the other a Lexus. No definitive word on exactly what they will be. It's possible, based on comments from Toyota execs. that the Toyota will be a Prius (part of the "Prius line" of cars they are wanting to produce). Not the current Prius, a different model Prius. My speculation - there may be Prius small car, the current Prius, a mid-size Prius, a Prius PU, a Prius SUV. Eventually.

The name Prius has turned to gold, so the marketers want to use it!

Eventually, there will be two body styles for the Prius, according to a Toyota source. The Hybrid X concept from the 2007 Geneva Auto Show could perhaps provide a few clues about a minivan-style version of the upcoming Prius package.

Toyota is also planning both bigger and smaller hybrid models with the Prius badge, as these hybrids become an eco brand that's all their own. The tiny two-cylinder rear-engine 1/X concept from the 2007 Tokyo Auto Show suggests what a future mini Prius could look like. As for the bigger model, Nikkei (Japan's leading business-oriented newspaper) has mentioned an upscale hybrid model with an engine between 2.0 liters and 3.0 liters that could bow as early as 2010, although this has yet to be confirmed by other sources (and indeed this car might even appear in due course with a Lexus badge).

As far as the anticipated launch of the third-generation Toyota Prius at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, we have that information from an impeccable source. Toyota President Katsuaki Watanabe himself has spoken about the unveiling of the new car at the North American International Automobile Show, so his word surely has to be gospel.

The 2009 will not be the 3rd gen Prius. Wait until mid to late 2009 for the 2010 3rd gen Prius. This is hard to describe, because while we all think of just our car as a Prius, Toyota has hinted it won't be the only model with that name, so I don't know what to call the 3rd gen. I presume they will give it a distinctive name. Not just "the Original Prius 3rd gen".

The naming doesn't matter anyway, since the next will actually be the 4th model Prius if you live in Japan. Basically, the vehicles will end up being referred to by year & style... like the 2010 hatchback.

As for choices, the rapid growing interest toward smaller vehicles should stimulate the interest in an awd-minivan-like hybrid for our market. Estima seems to be doing well Toyota's local market.

Does anyone know why Toyota won't bring the Estima into the US market? The only thing I've read is that they don't want it biting into the Sienna sales.

When I put my deposit down on may 3rd (2 months ago tomorrow, maybe someday I will get my prius they say by the end of this month keep your fingers crossed for me :) ) I asked them that and they said that they would have approximately 8-13 hybrids in their line by 2012 meaning that they should be bringing up a bunch really fast here!
