What types of deposits are dealers asking for to be put on a waiting list for a 2008/2009 Prius? The reason I asked is that most of the dealers in my area are asking for $500. However one that I liked (seems the most honest) wants $2000.

On one hand, $2000 would seem to filter out people on multiple lists and possible result in a smaller waiting list and lead time. For $500, I can see many people (myself included) signing up on multiple waiting list. On the other hand, $2000 deposit is a strong incentive to hold the cash and never deliver.

    Any thoughts?

Around here the dealers are asking for a $500 "refundable" deposit. The dealers are not cashing the checks but just holding them in their safe. I declined an offer from a dealer and they just shredded the check. The main thing to make sure is whether the deposit is refundable or not. Personally I would not agree to a non-refundable deposit.

When I bought mine in May, I gave a 500$ deposit.

My deposit went on a credit card and yes, it was charged.

The particular card I used doesn't charge interest for 90 days but I have begun making payments on the $500.

$500 is enough to keep the lists "clean," so what if people get on multiple lists?
