Any recommendation to stay off the highway for better economy is bunk.
Just slow down, at 60 MPH you'll get 60 MPG or better.

I venture to say that if you can do 60+ MPG on the HWY under the right conditions (route; lights; technique) you can do even "better" in the city. 60 MPG anywhere is very good, but perhaps some of the "bunk" advisors are achieving >60MPG? No bunk! Any advice needs to be put in the proper perspective and adopted to your own individual situation.

My point was simply to try and dispell any false image, or worse, the acceptance that the Prius is 'inefficient' on the interstate, as it often is presumed to be. If Prius owners would slow down, use the cruise control and exploit downhills 60+ MPG is easily attainable on the interstate.

Many owners are under a false impression that the Prius/hybrid setup is only advantagous in 'city' driving. I want to dispell that.

If I stay off the interstate I could routinely get 70+ MPG.But that's not practical, nor possible really, for me.

I get in the low to mid 400's on a tank ( I let it get down to 1 pip).

I rarely can hit 400 miles. And I almost never am able to squeeze 9 gallons into the tank.

It's a source of annoyance for me. Love the vehicle. Wish I could get more gas in it though. I let it get to a flashing pip nearly every tank. Always one pip, unless there's a specific reason to fill up at some other time.

I usually fill up around the 370 mile mark. Somewhere in the high 7, low 8 gallon range when I get gas. MFD is telling me I'm getting 46.6mpg, so I'm happy.

200 round trip mile commute, I try to stay around 70mph, +/- 3mph. Any slower and I'll get tail gated and dirty looks/cut off by everyone and their mother.

Forgive me for not getting it.
First, you want to dispell that the Prius is inefficient on the interstate.
Then, if you stay off the interstate, you could routinely get 70+mpg's.
Isn't that the essence of efficiency then? . . . staying off the interstate? (notwithstanding practicality)
    Maybe you meant "less efficient".

I seem to get right about 385 before I hit my last pip. I am not disappointed because I get about 8 gallons in the tank for a total cost of between $30 and $35 max. depending on the the price of fuel that week. ;)

Excuse my ignorance of the Prius but, what is its top speed? Will going 80 mph stress it, if I have to?

This week I got 506 miles on a tank with an average MPG of 55.3. Mostly interstate driving. I have slowed down to 60 - 62 and yes I get buzzed on the interstate but I do not care, I just sit back and enjoy the fact that I am getting to the same destination, maybe a little later but with more money in my pockets.

105 MPH. The only thing 80 will stress is fuel economy, in case EPA rating is one's goal. ;)

This week I filled it and it took a bit over 8 gallons - $33 - and I drove 467 on that tank!

I'm at 4,508 miles (4 months ownership Mid March to now) Just rotated tires and changed oil (to synthetic Mobile 1)

I get (when filling up at 1 pip) 500 miles to a tank of gas for the past few tanks..
Total MPG on ownership, 47.4 as of my last fill up on 7/6

We're satisfied because the car is new and I am a new hybrid driver. Many of my trips are short.

    lol

Go that slow on I-80 thru Nevada / Utah and Wyoming and you likely to be run over by a Semi with 3 trailers doing 75+mph.

I've only filled up my 2008 three times now, but I get about 400 miles per tank (8-9 gallons or so). My gas mileage has been ok, not great, (44) but that's because every trip I take is a short trip. Also, driving around South Florida when it's 90+ degrees doesn't help, as the A/C is going full blast. PLUS... there is crazy construction on my block and as a result I have to drive slower than usual and be constantly detoured. And of course my car is filthy all the time. :(

Love the car, though! I heard that ethanol is contributing to a reduction in fuel economy, too.

most in a tank was 536, but lifetime average (through 27k miles) is 411 per tank, usually taking it to 2 pips and then filling up.
