Auto Theft Activation

The one time I sat in my car reading long enough for the alarm to engage, I set it off by opening the door.

Perhaps the dome light circuit is involved, and you have a short?...

 

Unless your dealer installed Glass Breakage Sensor, the only thing that sets off the alarm is if the doors, hatch or hood is opened. One of those 6 switches could be loose.

...which could explain the mysterious depleted aux battery situations we have been hearing about.

By the way, unless the car is set to passive mode, the alarm doesn't set until the car is locked.

 

Did your Prius come with the "glass breakage" option? I just recently picked up my Prius and didn’t plan on ordering this option but it did come with it. The “glass breakage†sensor I believe is basically a microphone coupled with sophisticated circuitry that listens for the noise that would occur with one of the car windows breaks. If not adjusted well (or if the car is in a environment where machinery might occasionally produce a sound similar to glass breakage) the alarm will be triggered. Years ago I had a car with an earlier version of glass breakage and it would go off sometimes if a car with loud exhaust drove by slowly.

 

If the dealer acn't fix it despite three attempts, you are heading for a "lemon law" car replacement... maybe they will take you more seriously if you point that out.

Yeah, right!

 

Toyota is aware of the problem, one of your front door locks is causing the false alarm. Unless they can figure out which one is bad they need to replace both of them.
