    Hi all,

I'll be picking up my new Prius (package #2) in the next few days.

While completing my GEICO online insurance form, I was asked about the Anti-theft Device. Which of the following should I select?

Please see the screen capture for my list of options.

    Thanks,
    Tim

Sorry for the unnecessary post! I just saw "Electronic Key system" in the list of options. I'm sure that is the most applicable.

(tried to delete the post entirely, but couldn't see how to do it)

yes anti theft in your case is simply an immobilization system.
you can step up in packages for a car alarm that is already built in called
the rs3200 or what not. they use a scan tool to turn it on.

then there is an upgrade called window breakage sensor and you pay extra
    for that.

i found out the hard way that salesman do not know squat about these features
and extras in my case. had to fight for money back because they double charged
    me for the car alarm.

Well, I went to another car show last night and discovered that the hood is on the alarm (don't know where the switch is). Front windows were down, reached in the car to release the hood when someone asked to see the engine. I forgot the car was locked. Away went the alarm (horn beeps and lights flash). :)

Can the rs3200 be added to a 2008 package 2?

Also I'm assuming that using an alarm system wouldn't render the SKS useless?

Its been said here that the alarm system on all Prii is built in but not turned on, and most nice reputable dealers will turn it on at no charge. Mine's not on, I hate going to the dealer. They also didn't give me any carpet clips, but I've not really noticed a need (until the carpet bunches up around the gas pedal and the car runs away out of control). At some point I will take it in to the dealer. The problem with this darn car is it never needs to go back to the dealer :thumb:

Any dealer can turn it on for you. Find a friendly service dept, perhaps they will do it for you during routine service. It has no effect on SKS. Note that the "glass breakage sensor" is an extra cost item they plug into the system and stick on the bottom centre of the dash. You don't need it for the alarm to function, however. Kind of superfluous in my opinion. It goes off -after- the moron has destroyed an expensive window. Might as well wait until the moron then opens a door.

Note that the alarm sounds the horn and flashes the lights. That's it.

No matter whether it's programmed to function or not, you still have the vehicle immobilizer.

I'm so glad I found PriusChat... I'm still on the waiting list for my Prius, we asked our salesman if they could install an alarm system on a package 2 and I think he quoted us like $250 or something like that. Between this and the extended warranty I think PriusChat is going to end up saving me quite a bit of money!

I've never had this much time to research a car before I picked one up (maybe stupidity on my part)... one positive thing about the long waiting lists!

what has me confused is that the alarm is active on my prius
and its extra money for the GBS

but there are two options available for my prius
    1) rs3200 for $300
    2) gbs

what the heck is rs3200 ? and why is rs3200 offered on cars that already have the factory alarm turned on?

yeah, toyota finally fixed the build your prius page, it used to list the glass breakge sensor and the rs3200 as two different options you can choose on a car that already has the factory alarm enabled (like package 3)
    now it just lists gbs

The dealer told me I don't have any alarm on my 2008 package 2 (that I'll pick up next week) and wanted to charge me $700 to install one, but if I am understanding all of this correctly my car will come with an alarm, but I have to ask them to turn it on. right? what is the exact word I should use when asking for this? "Turn on the anti-theft device?" thanks this has all been really helpful

I guess maybe each insurance co is different. With Liberty Mutual, I give them the VIN number, and they can call up all the features the car has, so I don't have to figure out which boxes to check.

    corbin:

    go to another dealer.

the msrp for a gbs (version 2) is $165 (requires at least a package 3)

i think and i might be wrong but version 5 ( for cars without the factory alarm) is $359 msrp

these msrps that toyota quotes is the total installed price

they say v5 is for "factory keyless entry" and v2 is for "factory alarm enabled"

    source aol autos
vip security upgade invoice $241 msrp 359
vip glass breakage sensor invoice $112 msrp $165

from my understanding both include the glass breakge sensor.

toyota.com also states that the msrp installed price on just the gbs (for factory alarm enabled) is 165

do not install v5 on cars with the factory alarms

    called local dealer

for prius base, package 1 or 2:

do not know for sure if you need both the upgrade + gbs or if the upgrade (v5) already includes gbs, good luck

VERY INTERESTING THREAD - from what i'm reading, my daughters 2008 #2 HAS an alarm system built in, but it needs to be turned on, and ONLY the dealer can do this???????

PLEASE VERIFY. thank you very much to those who respond.

When I ordered my 2008 Prius, package #2 in May, I asked the salesman if I needed an alarm system in addition to the SKS. He didn't know, but fortunately, I did not order the VIP anti-theft system. The SKS that comes with package #2 includes the most important part of an anti-theft system, the immobilizer, in that no one can start the car without the SKS fob. I guess I need to stop by the dealer and get my alarm (lights and horm) turned on. My insurance company, Nationwide, works that same as Liberty Mutual--you give them the VIN and that provides all the information on the car.

yeah write us back let us know if the $359 alarm upgrade also installs the glass breakage unit.

if you do not want glass breakage they might just charge you labor for turning it on.

i called my local dealer and they weren't much help, they kept forwarding me to different departments

they use the toyota scantool or toyota toughbook and use that to enable/disable options default settings.

There MUST be an aftermarket tool to turn this on yourself - or a sequence like opening the door three times while simultaneously pressing the trip gauge button and operating the windshield washer, all while scratching your nose. :p
