I have a 2008 Prius with Package 2, and generally love it. I do notice that sometimes about an hour after I've parked my car and turned the power off, it makes this beeping sound. Actually five super quick beeps in a row. Loud!

I live in an apartment complex and its kind of driving my neighbors nuts. It doesn't seem to always do this but often enough for it to be annoying.

    Any advice?

My car has never done this. The car does run an Evap test several hours after it is shut down, but that noise is not very loud.

I would try to document this by taking a video of it and then take it into the dealer to see if they can diagnose what is happening to make the beeps.

    Good luck.

Are you certain that it is off? What noises does it make when you lock it? (You do lock it every time, right?)

I assume its off. I put it in park and hit the power button. Which seems to turn it off. And then when I am outside the car, I hit the lock button on the door, which makes a beep.

I do sometimes forget to put it in park and hit the power button without first putting it in park. Might that cause the five little beeps? (that come much later -- like a half hour to an hour later.)

No, because I also sometimes just hit the power button to shut it down. And I have never gotten the 5 beeps.

No beeps here, and I either power it off completely in the garage or put it in park then hit the power button (depending on my brain). I've never heard the beeps in the past 5 months, but I have heard the usual stuff, coolant, evap, etc.

Are you pressing down on the break when you press the power button?

Even if you leave it on, it's not going to make five beeps. Look elsewhere for the root of the beeping.

The Fob is the remote control that locks/unlocks the door. On the Prius, it also serves as the key. You should have received two fobs when you got the car.

I've never heard the car make any beeps in the just over 2 years I've had it (not sure if there would have been any changes in the alarm system in the '08 model) other than the normal beep when locking and the beep beep when unlocking and the usual evap and coolant pump.

A little off-topic, but I just figured out a few weeks ago that my alarm isn't even active. I remembered reading some posts about having to go to the dealer and have them activate the built in alarm system, and I happened to be sitting at Sonic and so I locked the car, pulled the door handle to open it from the inside and nothing happened. Not sure if it didn't arm because the FOB was in the car? Is there a way to test if the alarm is active and be 100% positive that it is working properly? What I was thinking I might have to do is lock it and take the FOB far away from the car, then try opening the handle from the inside by having the window down. Any other suggestions? Is there some way I can go to the dealer and have them activate it? If that's what I need to do, what should I tell them so they will understand what I'm talking about? I think I remember reading that they use their scan tool or diagnostic tools they plug in under the dash to enable the alarm system. I can't believe that for over 2 years it would have been deactivated from the day I got it!

If you have SKS (smart key system) it won't arm if one of the fobs is in the car. You should retest by rolling the window down, closing and locking the door with both fobs outside the car. Then take the fobs at least 2m (6 ft) away from the car and then try to open the door from inside.

Then run for the fob to shut it off.

I do have an extra set of keys, the FOB, but leave it in my apartment (which is over the car, but more than 6 feet away.)

I do have a Pursuit Reomte Security System alarm on my car. I think that might be causing the issue.
