I have been looking for a Prius for awhile and had a dealer call me and offer to actually sell me a Prius at sticker. I asked him to fax me the price in writing before I went out there to complete the transaction. When I got the fax, it listed the car at MSRP and also had a $599.50 service fee, $699 Toyota Plus Protection fee, and a $715 delivery, processing and handling fee. Is this standard, or is it a bunch of extra padding?

Destination charge is $660 and is already included in the MSRP. Anything above what is stated on the window sticker + applicable state fees is bogus.

So yes, the dealer is trying to rip you a new one. All 3 of these extra fees are just arbitrarily added by the dealer. I'm willing to bet that the "delivery" fee is an extra $715 on top of the federal destination charge.

In CA, it's Tax, Title, License, and a doc fee. A nominal doc fee of say $55 is pretty standard but some dealers are increasing that to hundreds or more which is a not standard.

The $715 delivery, processing and handling fee is legit. Toyota's website actually states it's $720.

That $599.50 service fee sounds like extra padding.
The $699 Toyota Plus Protection fee sounds like he's making you buy an extended warranty? If that's what it is, then I would suggest you not worry about it. If the dealer won't let you buy the car without it, just buy it. Then after you leave the dealership with your car, call Toyota Financial and cancel it right away. You can do it anytime before your regular 3 year warranty is up. And if you want that warranty, you can buy it for cheaper from dealers mentioned here on Priuschat.

Also consider that you'll probably have to pay title, registration which will probably be like $100-200.
Tire fees (environmental) $12.50 for 5 tires.
    And, of course, state tax.

    Sorka,

I think they raised the destination charge:
Hybrid Prius – 2008 Toyota Prius Hybrid Car Site
Click on the [1] in "Starting at $21,500 MSRP [1]" on the bottom left.

"Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price, excludes the Delivery, Processing and Handling Fee of $720 for Cars and $745 for Trucks, Vans and SUVs. (Historically, vehicle manufacturers and distributors have charged a separate fee for processing, handling and delivering vehicles to dealerships. Toyota's charge for these services is called the "Delivery, Processing and Handling Fee" and is based on the value of the processing, handling and delivery services Toyota provides as well as Toyota's overall pricing structure. Toyota may make a profit on the Delivery, Processing and Handling Fee.) Excludes taxes, license, title and available or regionally required equipment. The Delivery, Processing and Handling Fee in AL, AR, FL, GA, LA, MS, NC, OK, SC and TX will be higher. Actual dealer price will vary."

I see that. It must have been even after the MSRP price increase because both kbb and Edmunds both have the $400 increase but still list $660 for destination.

Just make sure they don't add $715 to the MSRP if it's already included. A while back, in another forum several years ago, buyers were complaining about getting duped by a dealer that was adding the destination on top of MSRP which already included it thereby tricking them into paying it twice.

They did add it twice. Too slimy for me. I'll wait and pay MSRP

Actually, the "Protection" fee is probably for rust proofing and a paint protection both of which are scams as they don't accomplish anything and it only costs the dealer a few $ to apply them. In a lot of cases, dealers don't actually do either but just say they did and charge you for it.
