    Excerpt from the second:

"So it's of no great surprise that hypermilers are exactly the most popular drivers in this town"

Can you spot the missing "not"? Not all journalists can :)

Since this article buttresses its conclusions with the AAA's wisdom, it's only fair to visit CleanMPG to see their side of the story. Just sayin'...

Hmmmm. We should lobby our state governments to allow hybrid drivers to carry (and authorization to use when necessary) concealed weapons. :thumb:
We can save the planet one aggressive SUV driver at a time.

I could have written the same article with the title: "Souped up cars with really loud mufflers and stereos you can hear three blocks away really really piss off other drivers"

When will see see regulations actually passed and enforced that will allow me to hear my own stereo in my own car with my windows rolled up?

If I have to tolerate their stereo, they get to tolerate my driving.

"Driving fast in many cases, dangerously fast, is the norm and heaven help anybody who has the temerity to stay within the speed limit."

Hey, if i'm doing the speed limit and not doing anything wrong and some jerk off wants to rear end me or something or cut me off..let them, and if they hit me, hello lawyers and negligence lawsuit in civil court. That happened to my friends' uncle. He was just driving next to a semi and someone was weaving through traffic, slammed him from behind going about 75 while he was doing 65...his car was totaled and he was a little hurt but this guy had no regrets even in court, he said he should have been going faster and the whole thing could've been avoided....:mod:

How did the case turn out? What kind of penalty did the jerk get?

Well, the guy got a nice bunch of tickets. He paid the medical fees and all related court expenses. I think they got some monetary sum from it all but i never asked that.

sdtundra, In CA, on the freeway, the right lane is the slow lane and the left lane is that fast lane. When I'm driving home from somewhere, I chill out in the right lane with the slow drivers. When I'm late to get somewhere, I drive with the [fast] flow in the left lane. Every once in a while, some jerk doing 65 ends up in the left lane. What happens? It ain't pretty. Before the "fuel crisis," the CHP literally used to write those people tickets for going a speed significantly different from the flow of traffic; creating a safety hazard. I have a friend in the CHP. I know they used to do that. The social dynamics of the left lane have not changed; the speeds have changed, but not the "you don't belong in the left lane! get out of the way!" mentality. In summary, the right lane is the slow lane and the left lane is the fast lane. Be courteous to other drivers!

They're even irritating Prius owners. It's getting more common to get stuck behind some non-hybrid accelerating away from a traffic light at 1 mph / second. They must be really strapped for cash to be driving that way.

I am a very proud Prius owner, but this type of activity is simply asinine. I try to do hypermiling activities whenever I can except when it impedes the flow of traffic. One thing I do not share with some Prius owners out there is a holier than thou attitude.

    my feelings exaclty

i try my hardest to get the best MPG i can, but i'm not going to assume i have the right away to drive however i want (that's just as bad of a mentality as the guys/girls who drive 90+ and tailgate you in the not far left lane)

i know the sign says speed "limit" but i don't feel i have the "right" to drive 30% less than the sign just because i want to. we scream at people doing 30%+ over, so why are we entitled to be a jerk in the other dirrection

that said, if its a non crowed street, or a string of red lights, then yes i'll drive a bit slower from light to light, but ii'm not "holding up traffic just because i feel that slower is the only way to go"

    Yes, well put.

However, I absolutely refuse to accellorate up to a red light only to slam on the breaks at the last second the way I still see alot of drivers do. This isn't a new attitude for me, rightly or wrongly I've been trying to anticipate stops for a very long time; long before I ever heard of the Prius, hybrid cars, or hypermiling.

I'm sorry if people think it rude, but what exactly is the rush to get up to the red light? All they've done is burn up more gas stop sooner.

Well said. No point burning gas just so you can slow down or stop quickly ahead. Some people must waste 15+% of their gas doing that...

Nobody "causes" road rage except the road rage-er himself.

Regardless of what anyone else is doing, each person has his/her own choice to make as if or how to respond.

In any road rage situation, the road rage-er is at fault for committing road rage.

Check out some of the posts on YouTube for some of the videos referencing Hypermiling. I drive in the right lane (speed limit; cruise control) and turn off cruise control when I spot a red light. However, just driving defensively and within the speed limit generally ticks others off.

yeah i agree totally, and i'm sorry if that wasn't clear. I do anticipatory driving as well in the city, if they want to race around me to the red light, well there are some things i just won't conform to "the norms" about

@those who said that only the "rage-er" causes road rage... i feel that's a "not my fault, don't blame me" kind of statement. Sure the other person could probably benefit from a chill pill in most cases (driving the speed limit for example) there are plenty of times when the person in front is equaly "at fault" i mean driving 50 in a 65 will get you better gas milage, but its just as illegal (i believe) as driving 80 in the same area. And the people who are getting pissed at you do have a valid reason.

I love the poetic justice when I'm approaching a red light, not accelerating, and some dummy is in such a big hurry that they must accelerate to the light and then brake. Then as I approach the light, it changes to green, and while the dummy is still transferring one foot from the brake to the accelerator, I just pass right on by... :D

I can't tell you how many times I've seen a pack of economy cars and Prius cars accelerate away from a stoplight, and leave one of those big dinosaur SUVs in the dust! I constantly see SUVs being "left behind" when the light turns green. (I refer to SUVs as dinosaurs because popular theory is that dinosaurs did not survive when other species did survive because dinosaurs were so big and required so much food/fuel that they were the first to die off when vegetation/fuel became scarce)

Exactly. That is why I consider myself a "semi-hypermiler." I try to hypermile when I'm able to, but I'm conscious to not create a safety hazard or piss off the other drivers around me.
