I just want to thank all of you for the replies you have posted here. It makes me feel a lot better to have all the positive responses. Just to let you all know, I stood up for the Prius today & here I haven't even got mine yet! I was telling this woman that I had ordered one & it should be here next week. She said there was 2 in her neighborhood & she just didn't like them. Being the person I am, I asked her if she had ever driven one. She replied "NO". So I said that I had & I loved the way it drove etc. Then I asked was it the looks or what she didn't like? She said yes, she thought they were ugly & she wouldn't buy a foreign car. So I told her "well, if the American manufactures would get their head out of their A-- & make something as good maybe someday I would buy one of them, but until then I was going with the Prius!" She just walked off after that & I couldn't imagine why--ha-ha! Anyway, thank you all, I feel a lot better now & can't wait for mine to come in!!

    Nicely done

You have to bear in mind that one of the main reasons people come to automotive forums is because they are having some sort of problem. Sure there are plenty of folks here (like myself) who just enjoy the companionship of fellow owners, and enjoy learning more about their cars, but you will always get a disproportionate number of people with complaints or issues they are trying to solve on these kind of sites. Most of the folks who are perfectly happy with theirs are too busy driving them around with a big grin on their face to waste time on a chat board :D

Like many I bought my Prius thinking I was making a great sacrifice to reduce my carbon footprint and petroleum consumption. Little did I know that I would end up loving it far more than my sport wagon (WRX) or SUV (Land Rover). Now I'm really cheesed off when the wife wants to drive the Prius and I have to drive one of the others. Time to buy another Prius methinks!

I've had mine for less than a month, about 500 miles, but I very much like it and have no regrets. When it is time to replace my husband's Camry, we will probably get another Prius.

I can understand your reaction however. Three years ago, I bought a 2005 Triumph Bonneville (motorcycle), and started regularly checking in on two Bonneville forums. Despite Triumph Motorcycle having satisfaction ratings as high as BMW Motorcycle, the forums were disconcerting, because everyone writes in with problems and concerns. Occasionally, people considering a new Bonneville would ask the same question you did, at which time loads of folks would talk about how great their Bonneville was. Forums like this present a distilled version of a wide variety of possible problems, dealer issues, and future concerns. It's just much more likely that someone will post here with a concern or problem rather than posting something like "I just commuted to work for the entire month without any problems, car's running great, mpg is around 45-50, and I'm getting tons of compliments."

Maybe when gas is $2 bucks a gallon again--I'll think about buying a Hummer. LOL.
I do enjoy driving tanks occasionally. Especially with all those big trucks on the highway. One SOB trucker behind me wouldn't let me in to get off an exit the other day. An SUV driver in front of him let me in. There are some good folks out there.
Speaking of SUVs, I think part of their popularity is drivers feel safer in them on the highway next to the big trucks. I feel pretty good in a prius on the highway because it sits a bit higher than a normal compact. Not like an SUV, but higher than a Civic or Corolla. It's a couple of inches higher than a Civic.

Back to the Prius, besides fuel efficiency, I like the QUIET and SMOOTHNESS. No gears, no shifting--after driving a stick for 35 years. It's a pleasure to drive. Pretty much drives itself. And the electronics are cool. It's like having your own little spaceship. And very functional and roomy, with the hatch and 4 doors. I think it's the best car in the world right now. Bravo, Toyota.

I'll just echo a few others' comments:

    1. I wish I had bought mine sooner
    2. Hubby was impressed enough to go out get one, too
    3. I can't imagine another car I would rather own right now.
    4. I LOVE the technology and consider every tankful to be a new game of mpg
    5. I am stunned at the myths floating around and how many people believe them without ever checking (and really are smart enough to know better)

    ENJOY IT!

    What????

What, exactly, scares the you-know-what out of you? Perhaps if you were just a bit more explicit, the replies wouild be more specific than the "it-is-the-best-thing-since-canned-beer-and-sliced-bread" variety.

The only characteristic of my Prius I would like changed is how it accelerates from 50 MPH to 65 MPH. Texas has a lot of access roads and merging with traffic can be a challenge.

I bought my 2008 Driftwood Touring Package #3 Prius on May 1st of this year and have already put nearly 7,000 miles on it. I drive over 100 miles a day, 5 days a week in Houston traffic.

I swtiched to this car from a 1996 F250 Diesel 4x4 crew cab with a 4" lift kit, oversize tires and rims and requisite Ranch hand bumpers and grills along with a toolbox big enough for a car repair shop.

at 6'2" and 350 pounds - that truck fit me perfect.

But I love my new Prius and have been converted. I will now probably always drive a Toyota Prius - and at this rate I will put 200K miles on mine in about six years, which is when I will be ready to buy a new one anyway.

    Things I love about it:

    • 45-47 MPG with no effort.
    • 50-53 MPG with just a bit of focus
    • $30 fill ups vs $120 for my truck
    • Awesome 9 speaker sound system
    • Terrific Hot Houston Summer capable air conditioning system
    • Great cup holders
    • Two glove compartments
    • Impresses my coworkers and clients
    • handles well
    • bluetooth works with both my phones and allows me to upload address books, so I can dial a personal contact from my business phone (or any phone I have connected to it).
    • I can sit on the floor of the hatchback while I swap my driving shoes for my construction site shoes.
    • Filtered cabin air - I swear I can tell the difference when near petro chem plants
    • Can fit wife and three kids with me and take those long drives in the country like back when gas was cheap.
    • The hybrid drive is a beautiful work of engineering.
    • After years of driving diesels (first one in 1984), I now have a car so quiet it startles people.
    • Easy parking spaces and urban navigation.
    • And... I bought mine a few weeks before they virtually dissappeared from the sales floors.
If you are considering buying one - and have need for one (better gas mileagle, or a desire to have a smaller carbon footprint) - you will not be dissappointed with this car.

If you are considering a new car and have different needs - like a need for luxury or riding around in the rain with your windows down, there are probably better choices.

Remember, make informed decisions in directions that make you happy. If you don't, you will be dissappointed and sad with the choices you make in life.

    Cheers,

    Steve

My regret is not buying one sooner. After waiting for 8 weeks I got my Touring last week. So far I've been very pleased with it. I am used to a car with a V-6 and great handling so I was worried about the handling with the Prius. As far as I am concerned, it takes curves and handles great! I also had the misfortune of not spotting someone zipping around a curve and pulled out in front of them. I had to hit the gas hard to get out of the way. The Prius moved just like it needed to. I am a happy camper. :D

I think some people can always find a problem with anything and I'm sure that there may be things that are not exactly as you would prefer - but that is true of any car.

Enjoy if you decide to buy!

Not me. Its the first car I've ever bought that probably hasn't depreciated at all.

Not unhappy at all here either! Infact, I was so envious of my husbands, I went out and bought one! We both wouldn't trade them for anything else! They haul a ton of random stuff that I could never haul in my old Mustang. Besides, the dog loves all the room she has in the Hatch! :)

Include me in the "I wish I had bought my Prius sooner" club. I'm shocked that by reading these boards you have received the feeling some people are unhappy. This is the best car ever. We too are planning on becoming a two-Prius family and my good friend is on the waiting list to get one too.

I'm glad you did this post. I could not imagined anyone unhappy with this wonderful car. :p

Ok - mine isn't in yet, but here's my take:

You have to view forums like this (and any other on the internet) with a Pareto ranking - the old 80/20 rule.

Basically, those who have problems voice them. Those that don't rarely go out of their way to heap effusive praise for the product they bought/use. Factor the complaints in with the number of products on-the-road/in-the-field, and you get my point.

Before I switched to a Mac a couple years ago, I did EXTENSIVE research, and found a site that had the "problems" people were having with Macs, MacBooks and MacBook Pros in particular. Sounded very ominous, until you factor in that the site had been running for a couple of years, and their total posts were only about 1200. Not total problems - total posts (many threads would have as many as 15-20 replies on them).

Ok, there may be some issues, but in the "grand scheme of life"......

I love my PRIUS!!!!!! I can't say that enough. I do not miss my SUV at all. So far I cannot really find a thing wrong with the Prius. I am getting excellent mpg, the size and space in this hatchback is just amazing. I'm just sorry I did not know about this car sooner.
