Here is how one of my customers did so...
    1) Drop your Smart Key in the car.
    2) Open the rear hatch, then close it, BUT only partly closed! Just until it latches, but still leaves the "door ajar" light on.
    3) Lock the doors using the lock switch on the master window switch or the passenger door near the window switch.
    4) Close the doors.

Here is why the doors will lock: The body ECU will determine that one door (the rear hatch) remains open. It will allow you to lock the doors and close them. ordinarily, when the doors are locked then closed, if then ECU detects a key inside the car, but none outside, the doors will automatically unlock accompanied by two beeps. In the case listed above, the ECU determines that a door remains open.

How do you retrieve your key? Step to the rear hatch and press down. Once the switch is closed, the ECU detects the anomaly and unlocks the doors.

Was my customer attempting to discover this fact? No. Did they work hard to discover it? I hope not. Did it take me moment or two to figure out what they had unwittingly accomplished? (sad sigh) Yes.....

It took me almost ten minutes to duplicate the event and verify that the car was functioning normally.

Thank you for allowing me to vent my frustrations....

Hahaha, I did something very similar to that two weeks after we got our Prius last year.

I set my purse (with the key in it) in the drivers seat after coming out of the post office, and I clicked the door lock/unlock button to unlock all of the doors so I could put the mail and packages in the backseat. Well... I turn to open the backseat door and the front door shut and the back door would not open.. I had hit the buttons lock position instead of unlock. When I went to open the front door again it wouldn't open. ARGH!

The door had closed on my purse strap buckle so it was still shut and I couldnt pull it open. I went inside the post office to call my mom to bring me the spare key.

After I came back outside, I finally thought to try and push the door all the way closed, figuring that might not work because of the purse buckle being in the way.. But it did.. the car beeped (laughed) at me and unlocked all the doors after it "clicked" shut.

It goes to show.. my car was smarter than me.

they say that trying to make a system fool proof is useless as smarter fools always come up.

    Good to know!

I must renewed my AAA membership. I think their lockout service is worthless on the Prius however :)
