Well, I like to think I have brought something of value into the world. Not all who follow Christ or His teachings are loons. Perhaps we just prefer that 'fiction' to others?

Oh heck, who knows what is fact or fancy in religions anyways. Historians have disproved a lot of the dogma. Nobody really knows what happened 2000 years ago.

Composers, artists and writers of faith gave us great works of art, music and literature.

Christianism is derivative from babylonian, assyrian, egyptian and persian religious myths. Not surprising since everytime Israel and Judah were conquered the survivors would be dispersed to cities in those empires.

Wildkow - good points, I have to admit. In particular, Jesus was apparently born during lambing season, which is not in December, and he was probably born about 6 or 7 A.D. His date and year of birth were established, IIRC, by the Holy Roman Empire several centuries later by the best deductions they had, but probably supplanted the pagan winter solstice celebration on purpose.

That said, there are a lot of stories or components of stories that seem to be borrowed between the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and the middle east. A miraculous birth and shortened or unmentioned childhood is a pretty common theme, as is a deity and 12 sub-deities (the zodiac).

People have definitely killed because of religion, but I think if those people didn't have religion, they still would've killed, just under a different cause.
