Honda Takes Aim at Prius With New $19K Hybrid

This is great news! Competition helps the consumer!

 

Wow.....looks more like a next-gen Prius than a Honda. A total ripoff of the current Prius.

Oh well....I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

That was 2 years ago.

My point is that I'll believe this (same with the Chevy Volt, same with Tesla's planned $30k EV, etc) when I see it in a showroom for sale. Those vehicles look good when stacked up against a 2008 Prius, but by the time they hit the market I'm sure Toyota will already have something even better.

I wish it weren't the case.

the chevy volt even if it lives up to expectation will probably be out of most peoples price range, last i heard the volt will run somewhere around the 45k to 50k MSRP. Mainly because the battery pack itself is around 15k.

 

Most of the speculation in the article sounds like it's lifted right from the thread(s) here about the spy photos.

 

I'm glad to the see the Fit Hybrid or Fit Plus Hybrid. More competition is a good thing. I think the Prius is for a bit different crowd however. Smaller is good, but I needed the room in the back. Not everyone does.

As for the Volt, the concept is good. Can a rather backward-looking company leap forward that far? Only time will tell. It may help push Toyota to the commercial plug-in hybrid.

If Honda can pull it off (60 MPG 5 door under 20 K U.S) Toyota has its work cut out, wonder how (Honda IMA2 ?) emissions are ?

 

Im with Tim. I will beleive it when I see it realeased into the wild market. I would bet the chevy volt NEVER sees the light of day!

 

Toyota will always do well in a "smaller price bracket" challenge.

In terms of emissions the new Honda hybrids will be at least as good as the Gen 2 Civic Hybrid which is:

-109 grams of CO2/Km (Prius II is at 104 gCO2/Km)
-Tier 2/Bin 2 for smog forming emissions (Prius II is a Tier 2/Bin 3).

I was at honda today for service on my van.

They had a stripo civic DX $16900. Dont know how they can do a hybrid for $19000. I have looked at both.
The dealer said he had a civic hybrid that a guy could not get a loan on. He said i could have if i wanted it.Better jump on it he said. I said no thanks i will wait for my prius.....Going on 6 weeks now hope to here somthing soon!! Black PKG 4:madgrin:

 

If it is based on Fit, how come it looks bigger (from the spy shots) than Gen II Prius? EPA would classify it as a mid-size then. Interesting.

 

Kind of looks like a four door version of the old Honda CRX...

Glad to here that Toyota will always do well in a smaller price bracket challenge cause if Honda hits the 19 K mark Toyota may go 18 or 17

 

A hybrid below $20K is good news. When we see a FULL hybrid below $20K...that would be great news!
