This question may seem a bit off beat, but - you know how the MFD goes into night mode when the head lights are on? - Very nice feature, BTW.

Well... is anyone aware of a similar type display setting that could be used on an ordinary computer, when you're working in dark surroundings? That could be useful.

    Thanks, in advance. :yo:

My Dell laptop has a blue [Function] button. When I hold that button and press the [Down Arrow] key, the display dims. The [Up Arrow] button makes it brighter.
I use this feature all the time.

Thanks Tony. That works. Although, it's not nearly as cool as some sort of inverted color brightness scheme like the MFD Night Mode. But, without a back-lit keyboard, it's pretty much a moot point anyway.

i believe my Mac has a sensor that adjusts the screen based on ambient lighting as well

Yes, my MacBook Pro has an ambient light sensor and will dim the screen and illuminate the keyboard when the light level goes down. It does it automatically without pressing any buttons, etc. It is also possible to turn off this behavior if you want to using the System Preferences.

Also, it is possible to reverse the light and dark areas (negative image) using Universal Access in the System Preferences.

Nocturne ( Nocturne (Mac) - Download ) is a great tool for Macs. It can automatically (or manually) enter "night mode" which is customizable. I set mine to a nice inverted red-hue monochrome. This web page, for example, shows as red on black.

My relatively-new HP Compaq laptop (model 6910p) I use for work has a light sensor and automatically dims the display when low ambient light.

Coincidentally, my complaint about this laptop is the screen does not go as bright I would like for daylight, IMHO.
