    Aw, what a pretty boy!

I see you got your camera problems resolved. How do you like the Canon? I have canon printers and DVmini video and really like them. I'll be replacing my cheap Fuji and Nikon digital cameras with a Canon when I can afford it.

    I LOVE this camera :love::love::love:

I went to Best Buy last night and got it around 6pm and in just a few hours I had figured out the very basics of working it. I love the 12x zoom lens and the Image stabilization on the camera. I took some pics of the dogs playing around in the backyard and this camera will be great for getting close ups of the girls as they are so low to the ground and are fast moving. It was hard for me before to get very close to them before with other cameras as they always wanted to jump up on me and kiss me when I was trying to get a close up of them. Now I can do it from very far away and they don't even know I am taking their pic.

I have to get one of the Dummy books so I can learn more about lighting and all about the ISO speeds and shadows and stuff like that so I can take full advantage of all the great things on this camera.

The best thing is that I can just pop the SD card into my laptop and immediately download all the pics.

    Are you considering a printer?

I have a Canon printer. I love it because the color tanks are individual. So if I only run out of yellow, I only replace the yellow, not the entire color tank. If I use magenta or blue more often, only that tank is replaced. The black tank is also separate, but I think a lot of printers have that now. The tanks are also clear so I can see how much ink is left in each tank.

When you get your doggy pics loaded, join doggyspace.com and you can become friends with Ramses, Dingo and Digby, the Priuschat dogs.

Yes,, I am going to get a Canon printer as soon as I save up for this. In the meantime I will just keep the pics loaded on the laptop.

I'll have to join doggyspace and get the girls pics up on that site.

My experience with home photo printers has been disappointing, to say the least. In my experience, it's better to just take your memory card to one of those print-it-yourself photo machines that seem to be all over the place these days (i.e. in photo processing places, but also in drug stores and other places that develop film). Perhaps I just haven't kept up to date with technology, but last time I looked, home-developed pictures never looked as good as those from the machine, the tended to fade relatively quickly, and the economics of the whole thing never seemed like it was such a great deal. For $0.19 (or less) per print, I'd rather go to the machines. If you don't mind the wait, you can also get excellent photo processing from many of the online companies for even less (e.g. Snapfish, Shutterfly, etc.)

I concur with not doing your own printing, there are lots of options out there. I go with Snapfish, upload my images and tell them to print them at a local chain pharmacy. I usually get an email within 3 hours telling me they are ready for pickup.

That looks like a great little camera! I love Canons, just replaced my (film) AE1 circa 1985 with a Digital Rebel Xsi. I've got a bit of a learning curve there, too! ;)

    Have fun with it!

Agreed...don't do your own printing. It's much more expensive and the quality won't approach what you can get in 1-hour at Wal-mart or Walgreen for $0.15 per.

I bought my wife an S2 IS about 3 years ago and recommended the S5 to my sister in law....the S5 is a nice step up and is a very nice consumer level digicam that should serve you very well for several years. Be sure you get your resolution and such set up how you want it.

Jim, Are you also on one of the Canon Photography Forums?? I joined one yesterday and could swear I saw someone posting a pic of their dog that looks exactly like your avatar pic and thought they were also from MIL like you are.

I have no idea what that means :D And this is exactly the reason why I need to get one of those Digital Photography for Dummy books they sell.

I have to learn all about lighting, ISO speeds, shadows, and basically everything. My prior experience has just been taking pics with the "Oh, this is a pretty pic" kind of mentality. I really want to learn the hobby as I have always loved and had a great appreciation for great photographs.

I signed up on 2 Canon Photography forums and one of them is specifically for the Canon S5 IS so I hope to learn a lot from them and get myself one of those Dummy books.

which canon printer do you have godiva? i have the i860 and its great. its 4 years old now and still cranking along. if you put my pictures next to the originals, you cant tell the difference. (when i scan pictures to make copies). i had to replace the photo tray because i wore it out from overuse!! i too love the individual tanks and the ability to see when they are getting low. i dont know how much longer she will work well, but i wouldnt even know what to replace it with when it finally gives up.

I think mine is older than that.

I have an S600 and an i850. Both use the same size individual cartridges. (Not all canon printers do)

The i850 does borderless prints. I use both for mostly text. But I will print out pictures occasionally. Since my pictures are digital, I mostly store them and use them digitally, like on web pages. I don't need anything professional grade for printing pictures. If a picture fades (hasn't happened yet) or gets damaged or lost, I can just print another.

I did have to replace the print heads on both because they got gummed up using generic cheap ink.

Whatever printer you get, use the ink the manufacturer recommends. It may be more expensive, but it's cheaper than a new print head.

I don't think that's me, although I have hung around many of those forums a lot over the last 7 months when I was researching camera models. Lots of good information available.

I think I only use Jack as an avatar here, but being a Beagle he is prone to wander!

A dummies book is a good idea.
Lighting is an involved and fairly difficult area...something that really has to wait since you'll have very little control of lighting anyway.
Understanding f-stop and shutter speed are good concepts to know conceptually, even though you'll probably leave the Canon in Program or Auto mode most of the time.

The best place to start is with a good understanding of composition...how to frame the items in a picture... Once you've got an eye for not putting everything zoomed in smack in the middle of the frame your pictures will start to 'pop'.

The Canon is what, 10MP? That's fine, but taking a full resolution 10MP image every time eats lots of memory...sometimes you might want to reduce the resolution (the amount of detail stored), and other times you may want to maximize the resolution. The book is a pretty good place to start for how to set that.

I'll also recommend something that will come in very handy to allow you to access all the features when you don't want to haul around your manual:
The PhotoBert Cheat Sheet: PhotoBert CheatSheets

His general photography card is essentially a dummy's book on a single card that is a good quick reference in the field when you have a unique shot or a problem getting a shot to work:
    PhotoBert CheatSheets

You get a shipping discount when you buy more than one and I buy one of his cards for every new camera I get (I have about 5 or 6 now). I don't use them a lot, but when I need some funky setting it can be a life saver.

Since this thread is about the S5 IS, I have to relay my story about Canon Customer Service which I originally posted here: Canon Customer Service - Ford Explorer Ranger Enthusiasts Serious Explorations

Now we have a S5 IS and a Canon XTi. Both are very nice cameras.

Evan, Thanks for that info and the link for the cheat sheets. Those are really cool. I am sure I will buy some.

Dogfriend, that is great news about the superb customer service for Canon. I am just loving this camera and I am really looking forward to the fall coming here in Chicago so I can get out and start getting some great shots on the leaves changing out in the forest preserves.

I have been very busy working a lot of overtime lately, and I am waiting for a Saturday that I am off and I can take a small road trip with my Prius and the camera and take some more pics out in the forest preserves.

I'll probably pick up one of those Digital Photography for Dummys book in the next day or so and then get some of those cheat sheets from that website.

I actually brought the camera to work with me yesterday and walked around a bit downtown at lunch at took some pics. The Sears Tower is just a few blocks from me and is visible from the corner of my office so I got a few shots of that and some old buildings here in the South Loop area. I was even able to zoom in on the prisoners at the top of the Metropolitan Correctional Center that is right in the middle of the loop. They have the prison exercise yard at the very top of the prison and my camera zoomed all the way up there and I got a few shots of the prisoners standing around in their orange jumpsuits. I probably should not have been taking shots of the Federal Prison, but there would have been no way that anyone would have known that I was really aiming at the prison and not another building in the vacinity.

I even learned how to take a few Super Macro shots and think I am going to really get into this Macro photo thing. I have to find some cool bugs to practice on.

Congrats on the new camera Michelle! On the subject of printers, I've gone through a few, I had been a fan of HP, but about a year ago, my trusty old HP printer decided to call it quits. So I did a quite a bit of investigating before buying a replacement, the big 3, HP, Canon, and Epson all do decient jobs of printing, some use individual ink tanks, others combined, with HP the print head is part of the ink tanks, but they all have one thing in common, ink is EXPENSIVE! I ended up going with the new Kodak all in one printer, it uses two ink cartridges, a black and a six color, cost to replace is $25 for both (MSRP) vs $60 to $80 for any of the others. I've had the printer for about a year now and am quite impressed with it all in all.
On the subject of forums to go to I'd like to recommend Steve's Digicams - Main Menu I think you will be able to pick up lots of pointers there... Good luck and happy shooting! ;)

A question to those of you that like home photo printers:

Is there any advantage to them other than the convenience? From the (few) examples I've seen, they can not compare to the professional machines in either quality or cost.

For doing large format pictures and being able to fine-tune the image how you want it they can be very nice...different texture papers and different quality paper can give some very nice variations to ones images and enhance the 'art' of the image.

But for 4x6 prints to show at friends and family I don't think there is any advantage at all unless you simply have no convenient way to use a local processor.

Larger prints can be hard to get in high quality unless you use a larger photo printer or pro lab...which is what I do.
