Touring Suspension Parts Research

    Well I finally received my order for the remaining pieces to complete my touring suspension conversion. I have already installed the rear stabilizer bar. My SOTP meter has told me: "Holy crap, this car is starting to handle the way it should!" I will have to finish up the front, probably next week due to the amount of disassembly involved. Today, I plan on painting my new rear touring spoiler, along with the BT Tech spoiler I picked up a while back, and install them both in a few days:D.

    Oh, BTW, I have had the BT Tech plate and the Tom's strut brace installed for awhile now. IMO both made an improvement to the Prius, but it just wasn't enough. After the touring conversion I plan on purchasing the rest of the Tom's pieces. The Sportivo is not an option due to the NY roads I drive on...

    Could you please also measure the height of the two rear springs that you deinstalled, and see if there are any differences between the two. Thanks!

    Actually, the most valuable part of the factory touring pkg. is the leather wrapped steering wheel. No one seems to have mentioned that. Price one of those. You thought the pkg. option price was a bargain, you're not kidding.

    Personally I think the wheels and tires would have the biggest impact on handling, and of course, gas mileage.

    The leather is in it's own package available to base or touring. That is not a touring only option. My touring for example, is a mid pkg (HI I think they called it), with cloth interior and regular hard rubber steering wheel.

    OK for those of you that have asked...

    The uncompressed height of the original non-touring springs is 12-11/16".
    There is no difference in the height of the two, sorry.

    My car definately does not lean now. I get a measurement of 25-3/4" from ground (level concrete slab) to the top of the wheel well on each side. I can't say either way if my car leaned prior to doing the rear conversion. I don't remember seeing a lean. The only way to know for sure would be to reinstall the old parts, and that is just not going to happen...

    Thanks for providing the measurements on the old rear springs. Do you notice any left vs. right sag on the front of the car?

    Looks like installing the front stabilizer bar will be a major effort...since the steering gear and the exhaust system have to be removed first.

    Nothing noticeable on front sag, left vs. right. I will take another measurement to confirm this. I think overall I do have some front sag. It's time for the new struts and springs.

    I believe I am capable of doing the front bar. I am up for the challenge anyway. (If it was put together, it can be torn apart. If it is torn apart, it can be put back together... hopefully without any bonus parts.) I read that in a 'gear head' magazine once. I'll let y'all know how it all goes...

    *On a side note, my rear spoilers (touring & BT Tech) are now painted and will be ready for installation in a few days.

    Hey dogfriend, nice doggies, BTW. I have two Border Collies that are a PIMA but I love them as they were my own blood. Anyway, I have a Package #6 with leather, but no leather steering wheel.:( Must be the difference in model years.

    The factory leather seats with leather steering wheel first started appearing as part of the highest option package in the 2006 model year.

    If one bought a new 2004 or 2005 Prius with leather seats, the leather seats (no leather steering wheel) would have been added either at the port or by the dealer.

    Great attitude! Hope that the job goes smoothly!

    Many years ago I owned a BMW 325i convertible. The engine oil pan gasket was leaking so I decided to replace it, how hard can that be?

    The disassembly included taking apart the steering column shaft. Well, I was able to take it apart but couldn't put it back together. I had the car towed to an independent garage for that last bit of work to be done.

    I told the tow truck driver that the steering didn't work. No problem; he turned the tires in the desired direction by forcing the tires with his hands...

    Yea, keep us posted on the front bar progress.

    I'm eager to know how to take out the front sway bar without dropping the sub-frame.....or how to drop the front exhaust without a lift. But in either way, you'll need a lot of height clearance to get the front bar removed.

    I never said that I didn't have a lift... Anyway I don't think that I will need it. I posted the Toyota Suspension PDF. Did you look thru that? The sub-frame does not need to be dropped. Yes, the exhaust needs to be dropped, and the steering rack removed, then the sway bar slides out from the side. I intend on doing this to show that most anyone with a mechanical aptitude (and a shade-tree) can do such a task. If that doesn't work then it will go on the lift, and I will post it as such.

    I have the same Suspension Guide, but that's just a guide and paper-talk of what components are 'involved' in the disassembly. When working on the real thing it's always a different story.

    I was looking at the front bar last time when I take the wheel off.....it seems no way to even stick a wrench (or torque-wrench) to unbolt the sway-bar bracket. Just got floor jacks at home and still not have enough ground clearance, and a lift is needed for the job. :(

    fyi.. called my toyota dealer today to get a price on just the leather steering wheel.. just the wheel.. not the airbag, not the seats, not my grandmother, etc...


    almost $1000!!!!!!!!
