I have maintained Greenie, a '95 Ford Explorer with manual transmission and 4x4 since the purchase of Lola'05, the Prius. I have needed him to get out of my neighborhood about 4-5 times a year in the winter- just to get onto state cleared roads. And he has served me well on trips to Home Depot.

I haven't used Greenie since early April, due to the gas prices. And I had just had him detailed. He looked fantastic! That 18mpg is so bad, compared to Lola's 53. My question is... do I flatbed Greenie to the dealership for the battery and steering problems or do I upgrade the tires on the Prius for better handling in the winter weather conditions?

You actually get 18 mpg? My 97 Sport only gets about 15, but it has an auto trans, so that is probably why you are doing better.

I don't know if its time yet - all I know is that my 97 is now parked in the backyard to make room for my GF's motorhome in the driveway. I drive it about once every 2 months, usually to haul away something. It is part of the Sequestered SUVâ„¢ program - keeping it to keep it out of the hands of someone who would drive it more often.

    I say, let 'em crash.

But we aren't talking about great lines from movies, so that makes no sense here.

Keep the truck. You may need it someday, when you least expect it.

Have you thought about locking both in the garage and letting them work out a deal amongst themselves?

If you haven't used Greenie since April, you may have another issue. Seals, gaskets and other items will dry out. The next time you use Greenie to get to the state cleared roads, you may not make it! I believe you have to run the vehicle more often (and especially in nice Cal. warm weather!) to maintain it so it runs when you need it.

I held on to the Jeep for 7 months, and finally realized it was a lost cause. Sold it on craigslist.

I vote get the tires, as well.

I'm going through the same debate myself... except my love affair is with a little roadster. My MR2 has served me well over the years, but it's been parked under a cover, only to be taken out a couple of times a month since I got my Prius back in July of 2006.

I think I'm going to wash it up and take it to CarMax on Saturday to see what I can get for it. Then I'm going to try to get my Dad to buy it from me so I'll still have access to it :)

I'm struggling with a similar problem... I just bought a house and am planning on doing a bunch of work for it - that means many trips to home depot and the lumber yard, and a lot of hauling of stuff... Do i buy an old truck just for that stuff and only drive it a few days a year?

When I bought the Prius, the Blue Book value on the 97 Explorer (which originally was MSRP $28k, I bought used in 99 for $19k) was only $2200. I don't even want to know how much it isn't worth now. BTW, it is in excellent mechanical condition, reasonable cosmetic condition for a 12 year old vehicle. But worth less than $2k.

Yeah, Greenie has the looks and flash, but don't kid yourself. He's just using you; the moment you stop feeding his (gas) habit, he'll leave you high and dry. The sooner you figure out he doesn't care about you, the happier you'll be.

Yeah, the Prius may be boring, but he's reliable and cares about you. That's what you need.

Yeah, looking at the $$'s , I am starting to feel the same way. But haven't made the final decision yet. Love is a funny thing.
I can park that big boy anywhere...easier than I can park little Lola.

That's what Dads are for!

Find out what the cost of this truck is (how much are you willing to spend?), registration and insurance fees. Then consider: start using the HD rental truck. You will plan your HD trips better!

But do I have to load that truck and drive it myself? Greenie is the biggest vehicle I have driven. Maybe delivery would be better for me.
Godiva, with her dishwasher install has motivated me to try more home repairs on my own. Did a minor plumbing repair on Sunday...so far, no leaks.

Well, Greenie gets to stay another year. He had a flatbed ride to the shop and a thorough check up. A new battery...free under warranty and some minor repairs. All for less than an upgrade for Lola's tires.
As I mentioned, I hadn't driven him for several months, so tonight when I picked him up at the shop, I had to get back into the mindset of a 5 speed manual transmission. Didn't take long to get to nirvana. Manual transmission makes me happy! Yeah, I drive more aggessively, but I smile more. Don't have any reminders of mpg. So I will pay for those smiles. Like I said "Love is a funny thing".
Next stop is the car wash. He should gleam. Had a wax done just before I stopped driving him.

Yeah, I had to buy a new battery for my Explorer last year after it sat for a couple of months. In fact, I had to jump it when I brought home the Prius for the first time so I could park the Prius in the carport. ;)

You need to start Greenie every so often and drive him. Turn on the AC to keep the seals in the compressor from leaking.

Oh, I intend to drive him at least once a week. As I said, that five speed with the left foot action makes me smile. There were many things...not too pleasant, going on in my life the last few months that took priority over the cars. Get me to where I have to be now...which ever car was in the front of the driveway was what I got into. Things have now settled down. I am now a happier, more centered person. See me smile? Haven't done that for several months.
