Products names synonomous with the product type

Allen = hex key

ebay = auction

 

actually Xerox = Xerox (like making a Xerox)

 

Jell-o = flavored gelatin

 

Delco = Generator

 

Kotex = Sanitary pads/Tampons

 

Pop Tarts = Toaster Pastry

 

I can't believe Torx & Allen got mentioned but not Phillips!

Phillips = Phillips head screws/screwdrivers

Virtually every entry here (including this one) is a product whose dominant manufacturer's tradename for it ultimately became the predominant generic term, or was a new invention/innovation so its brand name was the default generic term, so none quite match what I took the thread's title to suggest: a product tradename that BEGAN as the already established generic term. Except I can't think of any. Heh!

How many of you remember Dymo = Labels?

Or your great-gradfather's Linotype = Type setting machine

I'll bet Remington was the generic for typewriter for awhile, too.

Don't forget Winchester = Rifle

Dynamite = Calibrated safety explosive

 

Colgate = Toothpaste at least in Haiti anyway..

 

Pampers = Diapers

 

iPod = personal music player

 

Star Trek = Science Fiction TV show (especially when used as an adjective)

 

Styrofoam = white, "expanded", polystyrene foam typically used for coffee cups, packing material, insulation, coolers, etc.

But it's a brand name of Dow Chemical for a variety of polystyrene insulation products made by Dow.

 

Zipper = Metal or plastic toothed, serial closure device.

Popsicle = frozen fruit juice on two sticks

Kool Aid = sweetened fruit drink made from a powder

This one's a stretch:

Moxie (originally had claims to medicinal qualities, as did virtually all
carbonated, herbal based drinks) = get-up-and-go, verve, stick-to-itiveness,
backbone.

 

Bandaid=sticky bandage(?)
