So I picked my Car up in Philly this past saturday (Blue pkg 5 (AI)).

I live in CT where there is NO sales tax on Alternative Fuel vehicles (found that out from a link on this forum, Thank you), unfortunately the Philly dealer was not aware of this and had calculated in 6% for CT Sales tax. That soon got straightened out and my taxes/tags went from $1,500 to $9.08!!!

Then when the finance manager tried to sell me on the Platinum Extended warranty (100K/7yr) for 1,700 I told him flat out.
"I have found dealers on the internet offering this same warranty for as low as $980 and I intend on purchasing the extended warranty and I will be paying $980 for it. So you can sell it to me or I will buy it elsewhere when I get home." The look on his face was priceless, but fleeting as he quickly regained composure and said "well, that is at cost, but we might as well be the ones to sell it to you." Thanks again PriusChat!!!!

Now I just need to hunt down the bumper protector and floor mat threads. I love my car. I got 46.5 mpg on the first 275 miles. Oh boy Oh boy.

See you at the pump (few and far between!!!).

So how about a donation of say 10% of that $1000 savings to PriusChat to help sustain the site?

    BTW, congrats.

Sorry, I should have put a wink or something there. I meant it as a gentle nudge/suggestion as many don't consider it and buying through your dealer instead of PC gives them profit and none for PC.

Please don't hold it against me, I did not mean it in any kind of pressure/mean spirited way.

it was really nice to see that you were prepared and not afraid to to hold the dealer to what was all that need to be paid. If Prius Chat was what it took for you to get the need infromation all the better. Enjoy the car! NB I know that Evan was just kidding sorry that you didn't.

The sad part of the original thread, if looking for one, would be that the dealer just might charge $1500 for taxes to those who don't know. What would happen? Could they keep it? By this time, I find it difficult to believe that your was the very first Prius they ever sold and therefore they should either have known better or have historically been overcharging poeple.

Congrats on the new car and the great off-the-bat mileage. It only gets better.

As Frank said, absolutely do not take any offense at what the good Doc said. Those of us who have been around here long enough know he is not THAT type.

ME ON THE OTHER HAND: I am an equal opportunity offender! Those who have been around here long enough know.
(I just consider it straight talk)

So dupreesdiamond, You say that you resent being told what you should do, especially when it comes to money . . . So, were you offended by PriusChat telling you how to save big bucks when purchasing a Prius? :?

Spread the love man! . . . but at the same time you could (don't want to offend with "should") also inquire why Frank Hudon and the Doc don't have donation badges themselves. (after all, isn't this a pledge drive?) :p

P.S. I have no doubts about the value the Doc brings to PriusChat being a moderator.

[did I do a good enough job being equal?] :)

The dealer should refund the tax once they submit the paperwork to motorvehicle. They are supposed to be acting as an agent, collecting tax, not charging tax, so any that they don't pay to govt is supposed to be refunded.

Geez what a bunch of crybabies! Try paying GST and PST on a car in Canada.

Here in Manitoba, that works out to 14% (7% GST and 7% PST), or $4,900.

I am not sure of the angle, but the salesman claims that Central City Toyota of Philly sells more Priuses than most. But after this came up apparently I am the first CT resident that bought a Prius from them......

From my experience it seemed that an informed consumer is not something these folks expected to see (or least they didn't assume I would be one, being young and dressed in my most comfortable clothes). But hey, there is an advantage to waiting 6 months for delivery.

I don't know why a Pa. dealer would be collecting sales tax in the first place if your going to register the car in Ct.? I assume you got temp. Pa. plates and all the original paperwork and are going to register the car in Ct. yourself? Is that how you did it?

The PA dealer is going to handle the regsitration and taxes (or lack thereof) for me, and are to overnight the tags to me.
