Honda Japan put out a press release today with the first official picture of the upcoming Honda Prius-fighter. Looks like Honda has decided to go back to using the Insight product name, but this time the Insight will be on steroids in the form of 2 extra doors and about 1000% more usability.

It will be as expected - a 5-door, 5 passenger hybrid running the IMA hybrid system. It'll be out in the spring of 2009 and Honda expects to sell 200,000 of them annually worldwide.

    Yikes!

The front lip of that thing reminds me of "Bubba" . . . Forest Gump's bestest friend.

Sorry for the cross-post, but I can't get over the 2-door version. Hope they produce it.

Any other information available? Size, weight, engine displacement, MPGs?

That's the CR-Z, and I would expect it to be in production by early 2010.

Nope, none of that information yet. They are calling it a concept so that they don't have to answer those questions :)

A concept? With a 2009 release? Is this going to be a 2009 or 2010 model year car?

I like the LED fog lights, granted they probably won't make the production model.

Ah. Looks nice. Reminds me a little of the later Celicas.

I'm guessing it'll technically be a 2010 model. The production version will probably be displayed at the Paris Auto Show and that's when we'll find out all of the specs.

Yeah, I'm really digging that 2-door version.

Kow: I couldn't agree more. I didn't go the "Bubba" route but the first thing I noticed was the bottom lip.

Looks like a Priunsight to me. Much more Prius than Insight in appearance (at least the current 5-door version). But now that the Prius is creeping upwards in size (and price), it gives room for what some people here have said in times past that they really want - a smaller version of the Prius (assumedly with better mpg and price).

That's a pretty interesting press release. They couldn't anybody to translate so they posted the babelfish version of it? (eg. "batteries under the load room" = batteries under the trunk). But I couldn't figure out echo driving in this sentence:
"Furthermore, in order for you to be able to realize the good quality of fuel economy in the customer, it introduces also new technology such as the function which supports echo driving."

I think other posts show the MPGs equal to the current HCH. Which I guess is goos since this car is apparently bigger??? But it isn't an advancement and if the next Prius does get 80MPGs the HIH will lose that battle. However it is pretty cool looking, even with the Audi grille.

Could this be radar or sonar detection, you know, whatever it is that stops you straying outside white lines while driving..

It sounds to me like "eco" driving. Perhaps they mean simply a clean emissions vehicle. Could it also be Honda is introducing something like the "Eco" system Nissan has developed?

At least the concept looks nice, but I wonder what the production model will look like, especially the interior.
