Wondered if I could get a little advice. I bought a 2008 Prius recently, and when the dealer installed the XM Radio, they damaged the top dash piece, putting gouges into it.

I pointed it out to the salesman, and he said they'd fix it. I've brought the car back several times, and the first time they painted the top of the entire side of the dash. It looked bad, very shiny, so I brought it back and they "rubbed it out." Now, it looks better but still not new.

I was told if I didn't like the repair job, they'd replace the part. When I called to request it, the guy told me he could do that, but that "there's a chance of future rattles and such and he recommended I not do it."

Question: Are they simply trying to get out of replacing the part, or is this true?

I told him to order the part, but he said it would take several weeks. Anybody have experience with this?

Yes. They are trying to get out of doing it. If the part is replace properly there should be no rattles. Everything should be as new.

i'd make them order the whole piece too or threaten to take them to small claims court over it.

i never took the top off, but if its held down by plastic clips like practically the rest of the dashboard, i don't see how it could rattle.

i bet you paid the $500 or something for the toyota xm part, and hell yeah if i spent $500 on the xm radio box, i would want them to replace it

We don't know their true motivation, but your theory is as good as any.

It's their responsibility to make it right, period. If the car has rattles after replacing the part, it's their job to get rid of them.

It's unfortunate that you had to point out the damage and that they didn't take the initiative to fix it. This experience should tell you something about this dealer.

Thanks. I figured my instinct on this was right, but I wanted to make sure. I did tell them to replace the part.

I really can't understand the dealer's motivation for this. Why not just replace the part? Do they get marked down by Toyota for this kind of thing? Does it cost them money?

I've really be unhappy dealing with this. I love the car, but what a pain!

Of course it's not right, Of course it costs them money, the dealer has to pay for the installer's mistakes, by buying you a new dash cover. The chump installer didn't know what he was doing, showed no respect for your property, and tried to shaft you by not taking proper responsibility for it.
I can't believe they painted the top of the dash, that alone would have sent me through the roof, let alone damaging my property.
When that dash gets hot and the paint started pealing, what then? How did the interior of your car smell, because it doesn't sound like they removed the part to paint it. What did they get overspray on?

Ask the owner of the dealership if he would like the dash of his new car spray-painted. Someone should literally be fired from their job for approving/proceding with and idea like that.
Make sure you get a different Tech for the proper repair.

the more disassembly you do in the dash, the more likely you will find a rattle. but they've got rattle kits to take care of that should there be a problem after they install the new part.

Painting the top of the dash is a legitimate repair. The dash top is painted from the factory anyway. Now painting the dash top inside the car is halfassed at best. I would insist on the new top (which would take days not weeks to get) and if I can install a new dash top using used parts with no rattles the dealer should be able to with new parts with no problems.

    All due respect.
    For this situation,
Brand spankin' new factory Replacement is the only legitimate repair. This wasn't a salvage car.

I would be angry as well. Sounds like whoever you are talking to is trying the LUC (lowest ultimate cost) method. While it is OK to paint these parts, to properly do so needs a complete R and I. (remove and install). If you are going to take it out to paint it, might as well get a new one.

I hate rattles, but if done properly, not an issue.

I had my XM installed while I wait (and watched) at Best Buy..knock on wood not rattles, but there were literally 10+ pieces that were removed and replaced.

Everyone has a manager........its a new car and they should take care of this.

If Toyota says that a car can be repaired that way the dealer can try it.

I would suspect that the factory painting of this part is going to be a much better job/quality than anything the dealership is going to do. Just get the new part installed and look for another dealership.

And for Jelloslug, if you were doing the repair, based upon the quality of the work I have seen on your car, I am sure it would be done correctly. :)

    Thanks all for your advice.

In the end, the dealer did replace the part upon my insistence. The car now looks new, operates properly and there are no rattles or other signs of the repair.

The dealer would have saved himself some time by just doing it the right way the first time. In the end, the quickie repair effort only cost him money and both of us time...

There's never time to do the job right but always time to do it twice. Was it really the dealer or a subcontractor? Time to rat out the dealer.
