Order or take what they have?

So I'm still on the fence on whether to pick up a Prius or not. If it wasn't about to go through a complete re-design and the new insight were coming out I would probably going for it. Anyway, it'll likely come down to whether I can afford it.

My question is: Do you think I can get a better deal (Prius or other) if I order it 3 months ahead of time or take something that they have on the lot? Or, are they about the same with the former getting me exactly what I want?

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Well, I had my Prius in to Kearny Mesa Toyota yesterday and saw 3 come in on the truck. Spectra blue, silver, white. All regular non touring models.

I also know that Kearny Mesa Toyota has run an ad in the Union Tribune starting Friday showing they have $500 off of MSRP the 1224 Prius which i believe is the Package 2.

Get what you really want. The last car i bought was a "have to", and i sort of rushed it. I ended up getting a good price, but i hated the colors that i got... and still do to this day. Hopefully my 09 silver prius will be here soon, and i can put all that behind me.

It depends a little on what you want. The west coast seems to be getting a better supply so three months might do it for you. Non-touring is in better supply than touring. If you have several colors you will accept you should be OK. If its got to be exactly what you want then good luck. In the Prius Waiting List Support group there are still eight of us waiting from May--actually one from April.

WTH is wrong with Toyota management that the west coast has them on their lots and on the east cost we have 3-4 months wait?

And if you want Touring in the Mid-Atlantic states, good luck!

Past sales probably influence current allocations. I believe California is Priusland due mostly to it's stricter emmission laws. I don't know the numbers but would not be suprised if California had more registered Prius than the other 49 states combined, at least before April of this year.

I only have a couple colors I REALLY don't want. I largely take a Shakespearian view to car colors. Thanks for the input. I wish I could ask a dealer this question but I'm guessing they would say 'whatever we have on the lot right now' even if it's not true.... urg

It might be a shot in the dark but most of the dealers around here will do dealer trades to get you the color/packages you want. I will admit a lot has changed in the year sense I got my Prius or the short time sense my TCH. Both times I was able to just tell them what I wanted and in both cases they were exact matches. In the case of the Prius I was able to catch one being shipped to a port that had not been allocated and the Camry had just been delivered to a dealership east of here.
I'm not sure how they work it in CA but if they have them sitting on the lots they might be willing to do the dealer trades for you. I wish you luck.
