First post...but I've found the best place to get good info is to look in enthusiast forums like this. Time is of the essence, so I figured I'd post after only limited research here...sorry.

We have a chance to pick up a 2008 package #6 that's black with dk grey. It's direct from a friend's company after a layoff, and the details are still a bit skecthy. It'll be $23k with 20k miles and was initially titled in 02/08. Not sure if it's Touring or not.

    Is this scenario:
    A. A steal! Do not pass go, do not collect $200, GET IT!
    B. A very good price. If we get it, we did better than most.
    C. Decent. But if we look around we can find comparable deals.

Also, anything specific I should be looking for conditionally? What are the factory bumper-to-bumper and powertrain warranties?

    Thanks in advance! Jason.

Considering the cost of that car when it was new (around $28K) and the fact that the Prius is "holding it's value" so well, I'd have to say 23K is a great price. Many used Prii are as much or more than the original MSRP. There are many on this site that can give you more detail on the mechanicals and what to look for, but as far as anything conditionally; check for any leaks (doubtful), look at tires for "strange" wear, and ask for maintenance record. Insist on a test drive. Warranty should transfer -- if extended warranty there is usually a $50 transfer fee. Basic warranty 3yr./36.000, Hybrid parts 8yr./100,000 - a little more in CA and some other states.

Curious -- What are the "sketchy" details?

Sorry... "sketchy" in that I don't have all of the final transfer details, and that I haven't actually seen the car. We just know the loose parameters (price, approx milage, etc). We've seen the '07 that our friend's mom got in the same manner 4 or 5 months ago and it came through very nicely. Clean, great shape, etc.

    Thanks for the feedback!

As with any used car, you should strongly consider having it looked at by a
competent mechanic. If it weren't a Prius, I'd say take it to the nearest
    electronic diagnostic center.

But, as it is a Prius, and competent independent mechanics are scarce, you
probably should take it to -- I hate to say it -- your local dealer. You especially
want them to check for any trouble codes with their special, very expensive --
and therefore usually found only at a dealer -- reader.

That price sounds good to me. As the other poster have stated, you should have the car checked out first, and check and make sure the car has a clean title.

Thanks for the feedback and the thoughts. I'll be sure to get the car checked out before we take acceptance, and the stipulation is there that any maintenance items or issues will be resolved before we buy.

Now we're just waiting for the rest of the details, but it looks lke we're the top of the list and it would take a major issue to kill the deal.

Please, though, keep the comments coming!

    Thanks again, J.

Edit: I share your overall apprehension for dealers, as the current owner of a Jetta TDI. I avoid them as often as possible. In fact, one of the downsides to the Prius, for me, is that there's a lack of general knowledge out there. That said, if the deal is good, it sounds like it might be time to take the plunge on this one...

The only #6 '08's I've seen go for that cheap have all been salvage title. If this one isn't salvaged, then it's a steal. I'm skeptical that the deal is real as they could simply sell the car for $5K more on the open market.

I paid $33,500 for mine out the door, new but I was overly horny for it!!!

    It is also a 2008, pg#6.

Really sounds like a great deal and with the money you'll be saving have it checked out by Toyota.

    Next question?

    Hey all:
Well, again, the "sketchy" details became clearer. The title and carfax are completely clean but the milage and price were different than initially expected (and as such it wasn't quite as sweet of a deal), but we found that we liked the car, so we pulled the trigger.

    Year: 2008
    Milage: 8900
Options: Pk #6, carpet mats, cargo net. NOT touring.
    Price: $25,500 (before tax)
    Colors: Black with beige interior.

The only real issues are that there are a fair amount of sap (or something similar) marks on the hood and roof, and that the mats are filthy. However, the leasing company we purchased it from knocked $300 of of the price after they saw it to pay for a full interior/exterior detailing.

Odd scenario, as we picked it up directly from the lesee on Saturday, and the leasing company rep (my wife's friend) didn't see it until after we did. She agreed that a detailing was needed and adjusted the price as I stated, so it's all good. Also, the previous owner just took it in to his local Toyota dealer for an oil change on Friday and they gave it a clean bill of health.

All in all, the car is great. I'll post my inital "impressed" and "peeves" comments in another thread, as I should likely introduce myself better anyway.

Thanks all for looking, thinking and commenting!

    ~Jason

Jason, once the exterior is cleaned up you'll want a clear bra (either VentureShield or 3M) because the car is a scratch magnet. Inflate the tires & block the grill and you are set.

    Enjoy.

Thanks for the heads up. I really wish teh Clear Bra had been more prevalent when I picked up my Jetta, because at this point, the front end is looking a little rough with chips, nicks, etc.

It's getting tinted this week or early next week, so I'll get a clear bra quote while I'm there!
