What you said does not explain why the 0--5min bar changes after subsequent bars are displayed. That's what I meant by "updating", rsacker

Well the first five minutes comes up on display. Then after your next five minutes the first bar moves to the left and your left with two bars and so on until display is full of bars..The bar on the right hand side is your most recent 5 minute segment...

Let's use some physics common sense! If you go too fast your MPG lowers if you don't get it in the highest gear it also is lower. I got 62MPG at 45MPH on a 10 minute run without any stops, once. One stop lowered it to 48MPG and two stops lowered it to 42.5 MPG two minutes later. As long as you gradually get it in to high gear with several stops it will stay above 38MPG. With long stretches of road and stops every mile you could average 42.5MPG. If you accelerate aggresively (1/3 the power of a Jetta) you could lower it to 30MPG. All you have to do is watch the instantanous average to know what conditions are ideal. Not sure what the best speed is yet though but I bet its between 45 and 50MPH with no stops. Most people will probably average 42MPG all around. I believe the gas tank is 11.9 gallons and is designed so you use 10 gallons for which you can calculate into the current average mileage and thus know how many more miles to go before it runs out as if there was only 1 gallon left. So if 10 gallons are used and you got 420 miles the average will say 42mpg and thus there is 42 miles left before you run out.

I just purchased a used 2007 Prius and has 55000km on it.

My tire pressure is 38 psi front and 36 psi rear.

I just used 87 octane from superstore gas.

My first fill is 30 litres and 686km
    2nd fill is 33 litres and 803km's

My screen shows approx 4.1 litres/100km

I drive around town and have hills as well and during the 2nd fill
I did drive 200km's on the highway.

I think the fuel economy is pretty good.

I have just filled up with 91% octane and we'll see what happens.

I need to get an oil change done on it.
I think the dealer suggests regular 5W30 oil.

Do you think it's better to start using synthetic 5W30 or stick with
    regular 5W30?

I must be linving wrong or you people live in really flat country. I'm on the coast of Washington and most of my driving involves hill climbing on most of my town and commute trips. I've been averaging 40 to 42 mpg. The best I've ever gotten was a freeway trip with very little traffic and I managed 52mpg.

In the Puget Sound area, my best MPG is 60-65 during hilly commutes on side arterials off the freeway. When traffic is flowing freely enough to take the freeways, or I go on long road trips, mpg drops to mid-50s, less in winter.

    Hi all,

I have been in the pursuit of the 60+ MPG tank,..and have been judiciously tracking mileage since i got my 06 Prius w/ 83,000 miles back in May 2010. The first three tanks I got 56, 57 and 58.5mpg,..but then I started driving it like the BMW M5 I used to have (lol,..talk about a shift in carbon footprint!!) and got some 43 and 48mpg tanks.:p

I am back on track though,... I have even installed the EV Mode switch, and was shocked to see that I got 47.9 and 46.4 mpg on the two tanks that I used it wisely,..but I think I used it too much (starting off the line at a stoplight), because the battery got drained too low,..and my engine was constantly running to recharge the battery.

it's wierd, but I now alternate between 56-58mpg on one tank, and then get 48mpg on the very next tank.

    here are my last mpgs:

    8-5-10 51.8mpg
    8-10-10 44.7mpg
    8-17-10 56.4mpg
    8-24-10 42.5mpg
    9-3-10 58.0mpg
    9-12-10 48.9mpg
    9-20-10 55.4mpg
    9-27-10 48.3mpg

I do a daily commute of about 30 miles,..and driving is about the same. I have started turning off my a/c when going up hills (I'm in Phoenix, it's still 105 degrees outside!) and have been using P & G when possible.

Anybody have insights into why my mileage is fluctuating like it is?

I am looking for that consistent 60+ mpg tank,..and it is eluding me!!! I see a few posts related to battery charge meters,..do those help?

    Thanks guys!

    Matt

With the 2006, there is a flexible bladder in the fuel tank that is expandable, this bladder limits petroleum vapor (helping the air around you) from getting out of the tank, but due to its flexibility, the amount of gas you can put in the tank will vary. Thus, when you fill up your car's fuel tank, you never QUITE know how much fuel is in the tank, other than the amount you add to it (not like a traditional tank which has a fixed volume). While this may not explain all the variability you see, it will explain some of it.

Do you fill up at the same gasoline station?
Do you try to use the same pump?

I'm not sure what AZ's fuel requirements are, but there are some states that allow for 100% gasoline to be sold, vs 10% ethanol containing gasoline. This may be a contributing factor.

The best you can do is average over the several tanks to see your overall MPG's. Try not to get hung up on the 60 mpg tank or the 700 mile tank.

The EV switch will not help your fuel mileage at all, unless it prevents a 50 second "warm up" cycle on an already warmed engine, such as stopping at a shopping mall, turning off your car and then turning it on again to get a different spot, nearby.

Ok reset the mpg left my house north of dallas drove downtown and back 62 miles approx 85% highway. highway speeds ranged from 55-67 trying to P&G when it allowed which wasn't that often but i did try to coast on the declines and use total battery in city trying to keep it at 99.9mpg as much as possible. I got MFD 61.0 mpg over 62 miles. the parts where I used total battery power I had to accel very slowly not to engage the ICE. I know I'm probably doing something wrong but its hard to argue with 61mpg maybe I couldve got more I'm not sure.

Awesome job Sandman! I had been hovering in the mid-50's during the summer here in Phoenix (my goodness,..that heat and constant A/C drag down performance AND mileage!),..but now that the weather is moderate,..I just hit a 66MPG Tank,..and then, on my last tank, hit 70.7MPG!

    Two questions:

    1. I bought an EV Mode adapter - and when I used it for 2 tanks, my MPG dropped WAYYYYYYYY down (low 40's to high 30's mpg during the test during the summer). I found that my engine stayed on longer to try and replenish the battery,..thereby dropping fuel mileage. Did you find the same? Is there a "magic Touch" to using that EV mode?

    2. I don't have a Scan Gauge,..is that the next thing I should be looking for to increase my mileage even further? I can see where I will break 75 and possibly higher if I can get the exact battery usage techniques down,... I hear about them,.but haven't tried. Your thoughts?

    Thanks Sandman,..keep rockin' it green!

    Thanks Codyroo!

Well, as fate would have it, I just got 66mpg on one tank,..and then my last tank was 70.7 mpg! Yes, I actually track the amount of my fill-ups in Excel on my bberry,..and have found that it is the only accurate way of getting my mileage exactly down.

I didn't know about the bladder on the 2006 Prius tank,..thanks for that info. Yes, even with the recording of my gas fill-up amount, the milage varied,..which was pretty wierd. AZ does allow 10% Ethanol,..does that make a big difference?

also, I know that the Scan Guage is big for some guys,..do you have one? And if so, how have you found it to be beneficial?

    Thanks very much!

    Sincerely,

    Matt
