Toyota periodically recommends that the battery terminal service (clean the terminals) be performed.

My question is do they disconnect the battery when doing this and if so will this cause me to lose my stored data such as saved NAV points?

I ask because I drive on business and currently have all 106 registered points filled with my customer locations throughout the US and would really hate to lose all of them. Most aren't actually listed on my NAV map version 5.1 so I had to "Mark" and name them myself and I would hate to have to go through all that again.

Thanks in advance for the help.

A disconnection would be necessary to perform this sort of service. To protect your stored data, an additional backup battery should be connected to the jump terminals during the procedure. It would not have to be very large - just the correct voltage and no mistake on polarity.

    Tochatihu,

Thanks for the info. Now that I think about I have had this discussion before in another thread when we were talking about upgrading the Map DVD and losing data.

Anytime you disconnect the battery without some kind of backup your data, radio settings, etc... are toast and going back to default.

    Thanks again,
    Chris

so the navigation points are actually backed up by the battery and not in flash memory (like the blue tooth phone book or garage door opener codes???)
    please confirm this

p.s. this is a do it yourself job using a toothbrush and baking soda or something, you can do it at home without having to
    pay anyone

I've been pleasantly surprised my 04 w/ 118k has no white ?sulfation? on the battery terminals. Until I see some , I'd skip this chore. Besides isn't there a battery spray that can help with this?

PbA terminal corrosion typically happens if the seal around the lead posts is not good. I caused this to happen in 2001 Prius, by using a hack saw to slim down the posts on a replacement battery. This miss-step was followed by corrosion especially on the negative terminal.

I'd be really surprised if the nav system loses all that on a
    12V power-off.

they also got that little plastic thing with the metal wires in autoparts stores for a couple bucks

overcharging can also make the terminals corrode too, i think

I haven't looked over everything stored in my Nav system, but, I did disconnect the battery a couple weeks ago during some stereo installation work. My home and work quick destinations are still in memory. The work destination, like many of the locations you mentioned is a location based entry (not on the map). I did loose the MPG average and trip odometer milage due to the interupt in power. Phone book is also still intact.

    Like Weirdo23, I have a 2008. I've disconnected the 12V battery twice. Both
times I lost only the MPG average -- didn't check the ODOs.

I have a suspicion that somewhere in the 2006-07-08 continuum, the way GPS,
etc is stored was changed and at least in 2008s they aren't lost when
    disconnecting the 12V battery.
