So does the gauge measure distension in the bladder, or use a float to calculate the amount of gas remaining?

Very insightful question. There is a float.

Go here to get the whole story on the fuel-evap system --
    if you're expecting a simple tank-pump-fuel line, you're in
    for a big surprise:

I fill up around 500 miles, which is usually right around when the idiot light (flashing) starts. I usually fill with 9-10 gallons.

    Fritzenheimer,

That seems like a reasonable thumb nail of the bladder operation in typical
circumstances - remember, there's also the business about calibrating the
    inclinometers.

Don't forget the part about the whole bladder shrinking in cold temps.

Drive the car for max FE/MPGs. Don't drive for max miles per tank unless
you enjoy living on borrowed time.

Folks who fill up at 2 pips -- bars on the guess gauge -- rarely run out of fuel.
Folks who fill up at 1 pip sometimes run out of fuel.
Folks who fill up when the gauge is blinking risk running out of fuel often.

YMMV, or you pays your money, and you takes your chances.
