Fabulous!!! I don't know if it's literally true, but it certainly captures the Microsoft attitude.

Why do people hate Vista so much? I got a new laptop in August with Vista 64, and I have no problem with it.

I'm not trying to rile people up, I just sincerely don't get it and would like to understand.

You don't understand because you don't know what people have endured getting Vista to this point, a major service pack and a quintillion hot fixes. Prior to SP1 Vista was a piece of junk. Now it is still so different from XP and 98 that people who are comfortable with XP get paranoid when they try to use it. I've had many folks try Vista and opt to go back to XP. Don't feel too comfortable since the X64 Version is more buggy than the X32 version, both in stability and supporting enough devices. Most of my new customers are going to Mac's.

There's a real religion around the Mac brand. I've found that people are even more prone to zealotry with Macs than they are with Prii. There's no doubt that Apple makes a good product that appeals to a lot of people. However, their price points are such that many people would do just as well with a Windows box for what they want to do.

It is also true that Vista has had a bumpy road. It was probably released before it should have and, as a result, the early problems have really killed its reputation. I do think the reality is not as bad as its reputation, but it definitely still has its issues.

I'm a firm believer in "whatever works." If you're doing a lot of stuff with media, a Mac is a smart choice. If you're going to be doing a lot of computer gaming, you should probably get a Windows machine. If you're going to run a web server, Linux makes sense. For many of the day-to-day uses (i.e. web surfing, email, etc.), any of the three works and it just comes down to what interface you like and how much you're willing to pay.

To answer you're question, I'll pose another: What does Vista bring to the table that XP doesn't? I have yet to see anyone answer that question with anything that would make me want to switch to Vista. For my Windows machines at home, i have a very solid disk image of a fresh install set up, with all my programs and XP customized to fix many of the bad parts. The hassle of doing that with another OS makes upgrading really a non-issue. Further, those machines will never be upgraded to Vista because the hardware simply can't support it.

Two years ago i bought my first Mac - a MacBook. I had been a die-hard supporter of Windows prior to the purchase. I made the purchase because of problems i had experienced with various other notebook manufacturers that made me simply not want to buy from them. For what i was getting, the MacBook was the best bang for my buck, so to speak. The day i got it, i set it up to dual boot Windows, fully intending to use Windows for everything. But i wanted to give OSX a fair try (after all, i paid for it with the price of the computer), so i used it for a week. Then two. Then three. Eventually, i deleted the Windows partition because i never used it. Simply put, i found that OSX made my life at home simpler than it had been before. I spent more time enjoying my computer with OSX than i did in managing its operations. Looking back, I realize that i considered Windows "great" because I knew how to do things in it that most people didn't, and it let me show off and get attention by fixing people's computers. I don't know anything about my Mac that most users don't know. And that makes me even more happy.

Deepak Chopra is portrayed as an intellectual figure among real scientists in the Microsoft ads. Enough said.

I've had Vista since before it was officially released because I have a developer's license for it, and the Vista "body count" for me was basically this:

    1. iTunes didn't work for months and it corrupted music files on Vista.
    2. Norton AntiVirus didn't work at first.
    3. I had to sell my Microsoft-manufactured keyboard at a loss because Vista didn't have 64-bit drivers for the fingerprint reader.
    4. My "certified for Vista" graphics card blue-screened the system for months.
    5. Microsoft's 2005 versions of their development and database server software wouldn't install properly on Vista.
    6. Microsoft had no 64-bit Vista "connector" for Windows Home Server until recently.
    7. My recently purchased wireless N USB adapter crashed my system every 20 minutes and caused a blue-screen, causing a month long ordeal of trying to convince the manufacturer to send me a newer version with different drivers.
    8. Some disk-eraser software wouldn't even install on Vista 64-bit.
    9. An expensive HP WiFi printer's drivers crashed Vista's internet connection every 30 seconds or so, forcing me to sell the printer on Craig's list for a loss.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head, but the point is that I'm a Windows guy, I write code on the platform for a living, and I think the problems people complain of with Vista are 100% justified.

Having Vista cost me a lot of time and money, and I don't think it brings much more to the table than XP.

Vista sucks because they went out of their way to kill support for two video capture cards I have that required kernel access to work right. If I upgrade permanently, bye bye $900 worth of equipment.

So far, I haven't even bothered to install the Vista I bought the first week it was available. The deals I got on other software and memory seemed OK at the time, and I was in no hurry. Still no hurry, despite the occasional Vista-is-better propaganda I hear.

Meanwhile, Apple remains a computer for those who can't deal with computers...

Thats for sharing your opinion there... i'll go shred my Masters degree now, since it's obviously worthless. Never mind that it's a Computer Engineering degree from one of the top 10 EECS departments in the world... I guess i should probably quit my job too... Obviously i have no right working on software that has to literally have 100% reliability (or someone dies).

Wow, you've really changed my world outlook with that statement.

Isn't that a large share of the people who purchase the $499 to $899 notebooks?

I'm keeping my Master's Degree in Computer Engineering "unshreded" since I can work on Mac's and Windows (BTW, they no longer call it Vista). Neither Macs or Windows claim 100% reliability but Macs get closer to that mark.;)

It's not just Vista, it's Microsoft's attitude, and they have had that all along. I've been a Windows developer since version 1.03. I was a beta developer for OS/2, which was a pretty good operating system until Microsoft pulled out.

Don't get me wrong. Microsoft has made some good products, and they helped the industry immeasurably by providing a defacto standard, but they are a 600 pound out of control gorilla when it comes to customer relations and industry practices. Anything in their way gets squished, including users.

I, for one, groan when I have to reboot my Linux box to run Windows. I would never run Windows except for a couple of stubborn applications that I can't replace (so far).

    Why I hate Vista:

    1. No menus. Wth? I *like* menus. They make it easier to remember obscure commands than remember it's shift-alt-control-F12 to open a new document. Oh, yeah, that makes it oh so much easier, thank you Microsoft! If I wanted that kind of crap, I'd use emacs (not to be confused with Macs).

    2. Do you really want to run the command "solitaire.exe"? If so, click here. (click) Are you REALLY sure? If so, click here. (click) You're not very sure, are you? If not, click here. (click...NO WAIT! I MEANT...) I didn't think so; goodbye.

Old school methods of doing stuff are tucked out of view by default. Very little was taken awhile and classic views can be restored.

Click ALT. There's the assumed eliminateed menus.

It really depends on what you want. New features make the same tasks dramatically easier... which is great for newbies, but a challenge for those that perfer still doing things the hard way. You still have the choice.

I'd say the opposite... OS/2 became a pretty good operating system once Microsoft left the project. IBM really knows how to code an OS, and the WPS was heads and tails more advanced than any other GUI I've ever seen.

This is what it's all about for me. Apple is not a "religion" for me. I'd rather use Linux. But Linux is not yet ready for the casual computer user like me. It's acceptable for my travel computer, and both my laptop and my N800 run Linux, but for the home desktop, I could not get it to do what I needed a year and a half ago (more or less) when I finally could no longer stand to put up with Windows.

As for Vista, I have no experience with it. But I've had nothing but bad experiences with Microsoft. I've learned to expect crap from MS, so I have no interest in trying Vista. My iMac does what I need a computer to do. But from what I've read, if all your drivers and all your software work on Vista, you're pretty lucky.

Yeah, I did have to turn that option off immediately.

Thanks y'all for the thoughtful (and mostly not riled up ) answers. I guess I got lucky that SP1 was already out and all of my 3rd party devices and software had updates out too.
