From what I can tell, "far left" means about center from where you're standing. If I understand correctly, you feel there is no such thing as Peak Oil? We'll just keep turning the spigot on, and cheap oil will keep spilling out? For the forseeable future? You do realize that nobody who knows anything about the subject holds that same opinion, yes? Question for you: Did the US ever experience peak oil in the 70's? Are we importing 60% of our oil today because of those damn far-left wing guys who won't let us drill for all that un-tapped oil under our soil?

Then why in hell to you promote vehicles that are way the hell bigger and more energy thirsty than most buyers need?

I can't tell if you just like to hear yourself talk, if you like yanking the chain, or if you actually believe what you write. I didn't realize that there was an AGW "movement." There are those who desperately want to Drill Baby Drill, and there are those who don't want to. Either way, it won't amount to a hill of beans in the long run.

I'm sad to say that I think you think wrong on this one. At least form my non-scientific mental poll of comments from these boards. Yes there are many who drive them for other reasons. But I think the winner is still "what's in it for me?"

If there was anyone that had "gas will go down by $.50/gallon"by election day please step forward and collect your prize!

    I KNEW IT! ;)

Now we'll see what OPEC does about it....

My son works at Cumberland Farms (Gulf) and the talk there is that gas will go down $1.25 by Election Day. At that time it was $3.50...and today is...$2.99. In the immediate area, the prices are lower than Cumberland Farms by another 15-20 cents.
Maybe there is something to be said about that "talk".

Only if they tied that drop to the implosion of the global economy... It certainly will be interesting to see OPEC's reaction. It looks like Russia, Iran, and Qatar are looking into creating a NG cartel. Yah. Perhaps that will push more interest in solar thermal techs (CSP and water heating).

Malorn, that's peak US production, not global production. It happened in 1970. It's a well established fact. We can't drill now because it doesn't make financial sense to do so.

True about thing like gold and copper... but they aren't completely consumed when extracted and incorporated into products. Nobody throws gold out. These days people are stealing copper because of its increased value. It gets reused. So while it's true that there's a finite amount of it, we're not vapourizing it when we put it to use.

So it makes more financial sense for the united States to have oil drilled in other parts of the world, ship it across the world and send those dollars overseas? I understand that drilling will not solve the energy problems in total but it certainly makes sense over the next 10-20 years while alternatives are developed and brought into the energy mix.

    Malorn,
I tip my hat to you today. You were right (and probably lean that way) I paid $2.95 a gallon for gas at a suburban station. The gas prices in Chicago are like Sarah Palin's State even though we are centrally located in the midwest. I never would have 'thunk it' after the oil price surge this past summer. With that said, I love the Prius even more. I got 50.2 mpg's from the suburbs to the downtown Chicago even though the temps are winter-like.
I hope you like the Chrysler products as well as your Chevy Malibu which rides like Red Ryder Wagon over a bumpy sidewalk. If successful it will be like the two blind people who want to enter as reality show dance contest.
BTW, I am glad your prediction of the gas prices are different than mine although I didn't ever see the collapse of the world's economy as the driving force. It is quite a price to pay....

I paid $2.16 today for gas. I wonder if it will go under $2 soon! This is odd to me. I know it sounds odd, but shouldn't we be upset at this? I mean, if you bought a bottle of water a month ago for say, $3, and then it went to $2.50 and now is dropping even lower, with predictions that it might drop further, and it's the same bottled water, made the same, in the same containers, wouldn't that raise a few questions?

I do not know. I would think it would. Maybe I'm wrong.

Uh no. Just the educated center, I guess. I have no idea what you are reading into what I wrote.
Nice. So apparently nobody works for a living in the blue states? We just get rich from crying, "the sky is falling!" apparently. Cool! Anybody else you'd like to insult, or is half the population gonna do it for today?

It is hard to have a discussion with somebody who doesn't read what he's responding to. What we've used in the last 30 years is mostly imported oil. Hello? You didn't notice? Peak oil doesn't mean we're done. It means we're screwed, but there's still oil. A declining amount to match up with the ever-increasing demand. NOBODY debates that the USA peaked in the 70's. And guess what? Drilling today (or in the past 30 years) will not change that! Peak oil means declining discoveries. That ship has sailed.

Bullshit. Not even fancy bullshit. Just the plain ordinary kind. A political term? Uh, no. Unless some fancy way has been invented to create oil in under a human generation, peak oil is a real concept. We've lived through our own domestic peak, and the world peak is next. Politics has nothing to do with a resource peak. You may want to ask your far-right friends who know a little something. World peak oil is about as likely as the sun coming up in the East tomorrow. This isn't a mystery or a secret. It is what happens to every finite resource eventually.

Which means that we can and will have peaks for all of them! Hello? Is this thing on? A finite resource with ever-increasing demand WILL create a peak. Unless there's some wrinkle in time that will come and save us. Maybe the rapture?

I'm not the one dictating how much more we can drill. And there are PLENTY of good reasons to develop alternatives. I'd sure like to hear what some of yours are, and how they jibe with drilling more.

Listen carefully: We don't have enough oil here in the US to curtail our purchase of foreign oil. We have a tiny little percentage of untapped oil here. If drilling makes you all happy, then go at it. But don't for a minute think that it'll be a solution to sending our oil money outside of our economy. The more we DO drill and produce here (or buy anywhere) means the longer we'll continue to stay stuck with it, and the longer alternatives will take to come to market. If we *don't* drill, and instead use that money/effort/time to develop alternatives, we create jobs and industries right here in the US. The money for our energy ALL stays here in the US. The longer we continue to use oil, the longer we will import it, and throw our money away. Drilling domestically is a false promise. Can you find anybody - even in the "drill baby drill" club - who can tell us that we have enough domestic oil to make more than the smallest dent in our consumption? Within the next 10-20 years? Oh... and does that assume that our consumption stays steady in that time?

What you seem to believe is that it will solve LOTS of the problem - if not in total. And it won't. It can't. We have maybe 2% more (untapped) of the oil we need domestically. 2 is a LONG way from 100, isn't it? Do you have any idea why we started importing oil in the 70's? You think we did it BECAUSE we wanted to send our money overseas? Was it the fault of the lefties? When oil is drilled domestically, it goes on the world market. We don't actually control it, even if it is drilled here. But hey, that's just details, right?

It makes as much sense as draining the ocean with a teacup, yes.

If you try to drain the ocean with a teacup, won't the water you remove eventually evaporate, become water vapor in a cloud and eventually end up in the ocean again?

I had no idea "spring" came around Halloween.

And all it took was an entire meltdown of the economy and likely onset of another Great Depression.

Take all the credit you like, Malorn. How's business?

Hey! There's no room for logic, or fact here. Go stand in the corner.

(Hey! Where's you find the electric Hummer? I want one! Get a pair and we'll have races!)

Ah-ha! We've figured it out. It was just a geographical mistake. Great that we have an international community here to figure it all out.
