I've followed the procedure to the letter and have tried locking and unlocking with fob, smart operation, and physical key in the door. I've done it 50 times all within the time limits. I've tried countless variations but do not get the "answer back" door lock after the first phase.

I've search and the only results are those in the same boat who've never gotten it to work and nobody has ever replied that they were themselves successful.

Has anyone ever actually gotten the passive mode dance procedure to work????

What is "the passive mode dance procedure"?

Yea, that's where I got it from.

I've been trying and trying, but I can't get the first answer back. I've followed the dance to the letter and it doesn't work. I've tried all of the allowable variations. For instance, on the lock all doors and unlock all doors 3 times step, I've tried the fob(which requires pressing unlock twice to unlock all doors), I've tried the smart version using the passenger door handle sensor to unlock all doors as the driver side sensor only unlocks the dirivers side, and I've tried the key in the key hole.

I've tried every variation I can think of. I'm well with the 5 second time slot for inserting the keyfob into the slot in and out 3 times. I've tried it faster, slower, and everything in between.

I'm starting in the correct initial state(door open, key out of slot, and all doors unlocked).

I've searched, and all I've found are others who've never gotten it to work and no replies from anyone who's succeeded ever. So I'm guessing there's a mistake in the document that describes the procedure and nobody has figured out how to work around it.

I too have a 2009 Prius, and cannot get the sequence to work to switch my car out of passive mode. My wife is getting tired of setting the alarm off when she gets something out of the car when it's in the garage. When it's out of the garage it always gets locked, so all we need is the active mode.

If anyone has been successful getting this to work on a 2009, please let us know your trick(s).

i got in and out of passive mode relatively easy. the trick is to lock and unlock the drivers door only by using the little lock button on the inside of the door, and not the power door lock (which would lock and unlock all doors)

having the smart key turned off and using the remote control to lock and unlock 3 times makes it easier

a common mistake by me was having the drivers door open WITH the rest of the doors locked

it takes me a few minutes to switch the car into passive mode

yes so this a reply to your message from someone who got it to work..

also some people think that the answer back is a flashing of the lights, or a beep. it does not seem to be either. its just an automatic locking of the drivers door. that is the only answerback you get

Wow, the instructions say lock/unlock the drivers door. Are you saying that it works with the passenger door instead? And I see that you have a 2007. Is it possible that this is no longer workable in a 2009?

no sorry i meant the drivers door

when they say lock and unlock the drivers door 3 times, they mean to use that little
black tab near the door handle and not the power door lock

the directions as reported in another thread are identical to the 2009 version

another thing i found out, that is after you switch it from active to passive mode, you
actually have to start the car and then turn it off to get it into passive mode, after
you set it, it won't be in passive mode until the next power on off cycle

using the remote control to lock and unlock with smart key disabled worked for me

I knew that it was the manual lock/unlock button.

Is it really lock/unlock ALL the doors? I must hit the unlock button on the remote twice for each cycle? Does using the electronic lock/unlock button for all the doors on the driver side panel work?

I've tried all these things and just can't get it to work. The one thing I haven't yet tried is to disable the smart key system.

I should also note that I am trying to get from passive to active, but that shouldn't make any difference as I can't even get the first confirmation reply from the car.

The documented dance procedure is very clear about these particular items, so I haven't been doing any of those by mistake.

I still have not been able to get the first answer back(locking).

I tried all of those things including disabling SKS and it made no difference.

I am beginning to wonder if there's not something I am doing wrong at the beginning of the cycle that is screwing things up. Like when I turned off the back-up beep and didn't realize that you have to cycle through the ODO/Trip A/ Trip B and then turn the car off and do the dance.

I have tried opening the door with the key away from the car, and then walking up to the car, getting in and starting the dance. I have tried having the car running, turning it off, and then opening the door and starting the dance. Maybe all doors have to be unlocked before the driver's door is opened?

I'll keep playing and see what happens.

    Success!

Here's what I did today (I have a 2009 with package #3). I followed the dance as outlined from the link previous in this thread. I followed it as directed with the following variations.

Sat in the car with the doors closed and locked and key in my hand. Cycled the power with my foot off the brake pedal. Unlocked all the doors and opened the drivers side door.

Inserted and removed key quickly so that no beeps were heard. (3 times)

Locked and unlocked the doors with the remote, pushing twice to make sure I unlocked them all.

Subsequently, everywhere the instructions state "driver side door lock button" I used the electronic switch on the armrest to lock/unlock all the doors, NOT the manual button above the latch release.

Feedback from the car was a locking of all the doors, not just the driver's.

I confirmed that passive mode is off by exiting my car, shutting (but not locking) the doors, and walking away for a minute. I then came back, opened the door and sat in the car for a minute without the alarm going off. Previously the alarm would go off after about 12s.

As an aside, I have noticed that my owner's manual states that when the alarm is activated the icon (car with key) goes from steady to flashing. But in active mode now my car goes from flashing to steady when I arm the alarm.

Also this succeeded with the SKS enabled and disabled.

Changes the alarm system, selecting either passive or active mode.

Thanks! That did the trick. Not sure which it was, but the the thing I did differently this time:

    1) I turned the SKS button off. This prevents the power cycle, so I didn't even try that.
    2) Put the key in and out of the slot 3 times but I did it really fast this time so not beeps were heard.
    3) Used the arm rest lock in the step that said to lock and unlock only the drivers door 3 times. Of course using the armrest button locks and unlocks all doors. So whomever translated this did it incorrectly and what they meant is the armrest button on the drivers door rather than lock and unlock only the drivers door. This is probably the one step that made the difference.

active mode = in order to arm the alarm system you have to lock all the doors

passive mode = arms anytime you turn the car off and shut the doors, they do not have to be locked or unlocked.
