What was your first vehicle?

just my unsuccesful attempt at wit -- as though fossil may have acquired your ex-bug.

 

1955 flat black hand painted VW bug with fenders torch cut for larger tires. Bought in 1972 for $100 from an uncle. I remember getting 21 mpg and wondering and pondering why my dad could get 28 mpg when he drove it. Gas was expensive at $0.32/gal self serve, or $0.49 full service. The pranksters at Lewiston High School carried it up on the side walk and placed it right tires up 45deg angle on the concrete wall, I drove it the 150 feet until the wall met the sidewalk to get it down. (Disregard the details in the pic, not mine, just similar to mine)

 

Mine was a light green '66 Pontiac LeMans that I bought for $150 from a neighbor, $100 of which I had to borrow to buy it! I was just 15 and rebuilt the car before driving it.

1st car I ever owned was a 1968 Volkswagon Squareback,Then a 1970 Ford Pinto. 1st new car I ever bought new was a 1975 Toyota Celica GT..what a cool car for the day.

 

90cc Bridgestone motorcycle, that was in 1969 , I was 16.

My 1st car was 1964 Chev Impala SS Convertible. With the 327, 3/4 race cam, I got a whole 8 mpg. That was in 1971

 

We were way to smart back then to get scammed by the need to check oil, why it was just a way to sell more oil, yeah, that's the ticket.

Now my Senior year vehicle(#2), 66 Ford Mustang, paid $65 and had to tow it and in doing so, the left rear tire came off and luckily the tow cable came off at the same time as we parted ways. 289cu overhauled in class, repainted, 1972 Mazda 72 Pos recline seats, turned out to be a sweet car.

I used to floor it in first gear and after speeding up for a bit it would slow down and just stay at a constant speed for as long as you kept the pedal on the floor.

 

My first vehicle was a 1969 Datsun 510 station wagon. It was jacked up in the back with wide wheels and it was a stick shift. I had my father try and teach me how to drive a stick but he is a terrible driver / teacher. I finally learned to drive the car by driving around and around a parking lot. My father asked me if I had enough money to pay for the car insurance and I did not. He took the car away and sold it!! Mad then but good lesson now.

1936 Plymouth coupe (80 horsepower), followed by 1956 Volkswagen (30 HP). I added seat belts to both cars.

 

My first was a 1973 red Opel Manta Rallye, purchased new from a Buick dealer in California. It had a black vinyl interior. It was a good car but I was really ridiculed for buying a small car that got better gas mileage than the ones most people were buying at the time. How times have changed.

It was my mom's car, and my dad really hated to have to work on it. He usually had parts left over after a repair too. By the time I got it, it needed a lot. I could take a weekend day and just fix something. Lots of things didn't even need parts. Maybe just putting some of the parts leftover from my dad's previous repairs. Then I got into tuning it up, replacing the spark plugs and wires, doing the brakes, redoing the brakes, rebuilding the carburetor, a valve job, replacing the rotor and cap (and finally finding out why the car hesitated when I stepped on the gas, so replacing the distributor.)

For some strange reason, I'd rather drive my wife's 2019 Prime.

Was that a straight 6 or was it a V 6? A straight 6 is naturally balanced and runs really smooth.

My first vehicle was a motorbike. Calif had a law that allowed a 15 year old to get a license that was only good for driving a "motor driven cycle" that made only 15 HP (A motor scooter or motor bike). Imagine driving a 50cc Honda scooter with terrible braking and acceleration.

3 years later I finally updated the license to allow me to drive a 4 wheel car. First car was a 1958 Rambler American with an inline 6. Two doors with room for 6 teenagers. It had 3 on the tree with an overdrive. With overdrive disabled it could crawl up steep grades. With overload enabled it could do over 70 MPH on the freeway. Neither mode was valid for passing a big rig on the freeway.

 

It could be either, but Dodge, being Dodge made it a 'slant-6' - which is why we called it a 'half-a-v-12' back in the day.
This is probably owing to the number of WW2 vets who had fond memories of those wonderful Rolls-Royce Merlin and Packard V-12 engines that were still available in the surplus market.

 

First vehicle? 1976 Cyan Chevrolet Chevette.


First new vehicle? 1988 Grey Nissan Pulsar NX SE.

 

My first new vehicule was a 1973 Chevrolet Vega....in my case it was my first lemon ....kept it 11 months ..and got rid of it when it was still under warranty.
the Vega was not really a “bad car.” It was a brilliantly conceived, breakthrough domestic small car that was sadly cost-cut, poorly executed, under-developed and hurriedly launched to a sorry result well beyond Chevrolet’s and GM’s ability to save it.
50 years later , history seems to repeat itself for some car manufacturers
