I have an '05 package #6 that is less than a month old. I want to change my smart key settings so I can make all the doors open when either the driver or passenger touches the door handles. My dealership says this is not possible, but why else would there be a sensor on the passenger side handle? Can someone help me figure out how to do this?

Thanks a bunch for helping this newbie.

    Default is:
    Driver - driver only
    Passenger - all doors
    Hatch - all doors

To change the settings, press and hold lock and panic on the fob simultaneously. Doing the procedure once will give you your desired results.

The 3rd setting is that the sensor at the particular door only opens that particular door.

Hi Dixie! It's easy to change, as Tideland Prius said. Specific details are in the owner's manual and I think I saw a KB article on it too here on PriusChat.

If you are expecting the passenger to be able to unlock his or all doors from the passenger side while you try and act as proxy on the driver side, that isn't going to happen. The sensors only work when a valid fob in in its range.

To make the changes the others described above, see page 30 in your owner's manual.

"...but why else would there be a sensor on the passenger side handle?"

Oh, my. The age of chivalry is truly dead.

The reason for the sensor on the passenger's door that can only be opened by the person carrying the key is so a galant gentleman can assist his lady in entering the car.

... especially if she is in a wheelchair.

Or even if HE is a friend, but so far don't have any friends in wheelchairs. At least none that I need to give a ride to.

I have an '06. I have tried the procedure in the manual for changing to "all doors unlocking mode". I can get it to work when I first test it out, but then when I return and try it several hours or the next day it is right back to the driver's door mode. Is there something more to be done to make the change last? I have been using the lock/alarm buttons pressed for 5 seconds.

    Thanks for any help!

    I have an '06, pkg #8.

The instructions in the manual worked for me for setting all doors to unlock once you start to open the drivers door. The settings have not reversed.

You may want to try it again.

    :)

I've got an 06 pkg 7, and the procedure worked just fine for me (hasn't "reversed" itself since i did it 3 months ago). One thing you might want to check, however, is that you're hitting the lock button and not the unlock button... while the instructions are good, it just seems sorta natural to use unlock, and i got a little frustrated until i realized i was an idiot :-p

Just to fill out this thread for the '06, on page 32 of the 2006 Prius Owner's Manual it says:

CHANGING THE DOORS TO BE UNLOCKED

Each time you push the lock button
together with the panic button on the
smart key for about 5 seconds with the
hybrid system off, the setting for door
    unlocking will change as follows:

    1. Driver’s door unlocking mode: If you
    perform smart unlocking operation on
the driver’s door, it will unlock. Performing
    unlocking operation on the
front passenger’s door or back door
will unlock all the doors. When the
system switches to this mode, one
beep sounds inside the vehicle and two
    beeps sound three times.

    2. All doors unlocking mode: Performing
    smart unlocking operation on either
front door or back door will unlock all
the doors. When the system switches
to this mode, one beep sounds inside
the vehicle and two beeps sound twice.

    3. Single door unlocking mode: The
driver’s door or back door on which
    you perform smart unlocking operation
    will unlock. However, performing unlocking
    operation on the front passenger’s
door will unlock all the doors.
When the system switches to this
mode, one beep sounds inside the vehicle
    and two beeps sound once.

The first thing i do in the morning is go to the passenger door (since it's the nearest one to my house door.) I put my stuff in the back seat and then walk around to the driver's side. Imagine if you wanted to get to the passenger side first for some reason but there wasn't a sensor? You'd have to walk to the driver's door to unlock the doors and then walk back around to the passenger's door to access that side of the car.

Ok, so does anyone know how to turn off the beeping when unlocking the doors? I know that the back up beeping can be turned off. I don't mind the lights flashing but the beeping is not necessary, or so the neighbors tell me.

Having read these posts and page 43 of the 2009 owner's manual, i tried to reprogram the door unlocking function.. The first 11 times it didn't work. O the 12th attempt for some strange reason it decided to work. Must be the way you cross your toes.

i usually tell my neighbors to f*** off at that point. a couple beeps a couple times a day shouldn't bother them, or actually coming up to make a complaint with me is definitely unnecessary. it's not like i have loud music blaring til 3am - it's just a couple of beeps.

I just love this forum!!. I was going to make a small list of questions about my new Prius when I got my first oil change but thanks to this forum, I might not have anything to ask:) I had the same question about unlocking all the locks when opeing the driver door and following the advice of pressing the "lock" and "panic" buttons and holding until I heard a series of beeps, The doors now unlock just as I wanted.
