Negative Prius review in 2009 buyers guide

another negative review simply means, JUST LIKE ANY OTHER CAR, The Pri is not for everyone...

for the reviewer: take yourself off the waiting list, we "hope" to find someone to take your place...i hear the line over at gm is pretty short....oh wait!! nm... those are salesmen waiting in line for the next customer!!

can t remember the last time where hill climbinng was a consideration in my auto purchase.

we do have hills, nothing like Colorado mind you, the Cascades are much milder in most cases although we do have our smaller but just as severe stretches of road.

in August we did a car trip that included a return up the Oregon Coast. now this a route full of twists, curves, ups, downs, and primarily, VERY SLOW traffic...

opportunities to pass are brief and infrequent... now, granted, the SOC was good because there are no very long uphill stretches (a few that are maybe 3-5 miles or so) but in all cases, when i needed the acceleration to pass, i had plenty of it. going from 45 to 70 mph is actually quite a rush...

so, i can remember when passing power was a concern (not so much where i live now) when looking at a car to purchase, and i believe the Prius has plenty of that available

 

My trip from Bakersfield CA to Rifle CO was rather uneventful...after LV I pegged the cruise on 75 and it ran like a scalded cat all the way. The ICE was working hard up several of the grades, but never got down to purple. Low blue though. Wouldn't trade it!

 

I have completely drained the battery once and it was pretty much horrifying. I was actually driving through the Rockies, on my way to MO from CA. It seemed like damn mountains went up forever without going down. Suddenly I had NO power and started to freak. I checked the battery and it was completely empty. I could only drive about 20 mph until we got to a short area of flat road or slight decline. This happened 3-4 times total before we got through to Denver. It was really frightening because I thought the car was breaking down. However, over the 25k miles I've driven, that kind of situation has only happened once.

 

It doesn't happen in the Adirondacks. Sometimes people guess about things they don't actually know. Sometimes they guess wrong.

 

Well I just did 97C again today from Kelowna, BC west and it was a long, long grind up for a really long way. With a fully loaded car, I was easily doing 120-130 km/h until the battery icon was empty and after that I could still do 105-110. Check out the route on google. I don't have the elevation rise - but it is very substantial.
