Tires for the Prius

    I hope that you all are satisfied. I just bought a blue 2005 Prius. I remember reading that the original tires were fair. What do you recommend? I know that someone suggested the Michelin HydroEdge.

    A number of folks have changed to hydroedge but I changed mine to Toyo Spectrums. Also changed from 60 to 65s. No impact to MPG; just have to make sure that PSI is about 38. Also, a big, big improvement in handling. Total cost was about $342 which as compared to the hydroedge I thought was quite reasonable.

    Do you mean you switched FROM 65s to 60s ? My stock tires are 185/65-15.

    We need someone to do a knowledge Base FAQ on this. I know I'm coming up on time to consider new tires and I'm just plain not sure what the heck I'm gonna do.

    We'd need columns listing price, handling, noise, sizes, road rolling resistance (if you can find it) any alteration in actual mpg and any alteration you'd expect in speedometer and mpg readouts due to different tire size. Other specs on the tires would be good too.

    Might need a seperate section for those with 16" or 17" wheels.

    Anyone with decent tire knowledge willing to tackle this?

    Then folks could post comments about their personal satisfaction or dissatisfaction. The list could/should be updated as new tires come out and available.

    Consider the Goodyear Comfortread or TripleTreads. I remember seeing something about being able to trade the original tires at Goodyear within the first 500 miles. So act fast.

    Click on the TIRE RACK ad on the right. It allows you to compare traction, noise, etc. with many tires. This is feedback "polled" from customers.
    I am looking at the Bridgstone Potenza G009. Reviews say maybe a 1 mpg drop, but everything else sounds good to me.

    Yea, I've looked, but it's hard to sort which tires really work well on the Prius specifically with Prius specific comments on mpg, noise, etc.

    If no one takes on the task here I probably will, ultimately, refer to Tire Rack, but good data from people I 'know' in a nice concise format would be nicer.

    Gah x2! I'm closing in on 200 mi and haven't found a place that will do the trade up to ComforTreds (Goodyear stores or otherwise)! They all say they don't sell used tires, so they won't take mine. One place said they give me a few bucks per tire, but none would give the $40 deal. I'm about to give into living with with the OEM Integrity slugs. Any advice folks?

    BTW, I'm in love with my new Prius!

    I have brand new Michelin Harmony Tires 175-65-R14 and the specs can be found on john1701a.com/prius/prius-tires_classic.htm website which was so helpful . I wish i knew about these great tires when i changed my 1st set 1.5 yrs ago (with Potenza's) God those Potenza's wear down quickly ! I went through 2 sets before I discovered that I could change them to Michelin's. The Toyota dealer wouldn't do it and neither would the bigger Tire Chain Stores -- so i had a little local tire shop do it for me. They are wonderful so far. I drove over 1K this past weekend in the wet snow and rain. Great handling and steady while I whisked by the big trucks on the highways going 77 mph. Good Luck ! I paid 80 for each tire by the way (install and extra costs not included).

    Sounds like you have a first gen Prius. They had low rolling resistance tires where the 2004+ models use "standard" tires. So for me, there's no problem changing them as long as the size is correct. However, I'm still trying to find a store that will trade my Goodyear Integrity tires for the something like a half off deal. No luck so far; looking for advice from veteran pre 500 mi trader-uppers. I'm at 250 miles and counting!

    Last week I changed my Michelin Energy XV1 tyres to the MXV8 type (195/60 R15).
    The reason was because of a damaged tyre and the originals not being available (Oz supply stuff-up) , Toyota paid for three tyres - covered in a previous topic.

    It's very early in the experience, but my initial impressions are that they are considerably quieter on rough surfaces (less roar) and seem to provide a softer ride.
    Handling seems to be less "twitchy" - may be an illusion, will know when we get some crosswinds on freeway.
    It will be interesting to see if the fuel readings will be affected in any way - too early yet of course.
    How long they will last is to be proven - they were much cheaper than the originals. (XV1 = $280AU, MXV8 = $192AU)
