06 Multi Function Display Dead

    Has anyone recently purchased a refurb MFD from a Toy dealer for '06 (or newer) model?

    Yesterday, I found the MFD dead (completely blank) no matter what I tried to do. The radio still worked and I can control HVAC from steering wheel buttons. Pressing DISPLAY or INFO failed to revive it. After finding no new methods of resetting or resuscitating it in the owner's manual, I of course checked this wonderful resource for info, prices & any advice. Since I don't feel comfortable with DIY in trying to fix it, I decided to take it in to our local Toyota dealership.

    An hour or so later, they call to say it's not a connection or fuse related issue and that it will cost about $6500 to replace. Or they can check next week to see if they can find an exchange for a refurb MFD (whoever they called was closed for Thanksgiving weekend). They did not provide an exact quote, but suggested it would be less than a grand. I picked up my car since they can't work on it until next week some time.

    I have package #3 so it's the non NAV, non bluetooth MFD. I hope failing MFD's won't become a more common issue for the rest of you guys.

    Why isn't that covered under your warranty? Are you beyond the 36k miles?
    At most a brand new should be under $2000...$6500 is crazy and a total joke.
    Refurbs should run you something in the $600 range.

    There is NOT a history of issues with the '06 MFD like there are with the '04s. It should not fail and I would think Toyota would want to fix it. It is certainly worth a call to Toyota Customer Care 800-331-4331 if you can't get a reasonable plan worked out with your dealer.

    Salvage displays should be available on Ebay and elsewhere for a good discount.

    Thanks for the advice & phone number, Evan.

    Dealer won't help with the cost. I'll give Toy Customer Care a call and hope for the best. I'll update this post with what I hope will be a quick & inexpensive resolution.

    tell them you want a rental too. as long as its under the basic warranty, and the car will take longer then 1 day to fix (scheduling conflicts are not covered) they will pay for your rental car.
