Are there any insurance companies that rate the Prius better than others?

I expect my '05 silver pkg. 4 this week, and my current company - Farmers - says that they have no discounts for having a VSC or for the virtually theft-proof ignition system.

Any national companies out there who do? I'm trying to decide where to get other quotes for comparison.

I'm not getting a discount for any of the items you named, but we are all well-advised to shop around for car insurance, which can vary quite a bit for the same driver. As I recall, Farmers is among the most expensive insurers. You might not get a VSC discount with your new company, but you might get a non-Farmers discount. :)

:iagree: no discounts here. I had to switch to 21st century. I still pay way too much though.

I was driving a 2000 GMC Jimmy 2-door and moved my policy to my 2005 Prius BC. I got a check back from the insurance company for $149. Needless to say that made my day. The policy was only a month old and paid for the whole year.

    Happy Drivin

I go through Progressive. I don't like them but I got the best rate through their company.

Premium for brand new 05 Prius (full coverage/500 deductible): ~$500/6months
with multi car discount and airbag discount (no others offered)
    2 drivers, married
    22 y/o female, clean record
    26 y/o male, 1 point on d/l

Rates also depend on where you live, etc.

    Good luck!

I have Erie Insurance and get discount for anti theft systems and air bags, and anti lock brakes. Just got my renewal and it's $843 for the year.

I pay $378 through USAA every 6 months (for military for family members/relatives of military members). I get a defensive driver's discount (took a def driving class), discount for the alarm and kill switch, safety discount for all the air bags and stuff. That is with the $500 deductible on physical damage and $250 on property loss (up to $25k). Liability up to $500k, Bodily injury up to $500k.

defensive driving course.. where can i find that? maybe it will help... although i feel i could teach that.. i defend myself from accidents all the time.

no offense people.. but everyone i meet in this bar area drives like crap. hybrid owners are the only good ones. if slow. keep to the right.. not all the way to the right.. that's used for merging and such.. good.. stay 1 lane over.. no.. no.. NO.. not the fast lane.. NO.. no 65 in the fast lane!... (watch as traffic builds in the fast lane)... awww.. not again!..

    lol

Well, all military installations have it for their drivers (mandatory) and free. However, my coworker is going to a comedy club driving course instead. I think she has to pay $40 and you get food, and an 8 hour class with added humor. My class was a test in my ability to stay awake. :p I was always a defensive driver but now after taking that couse I realize how bad some others can be. Check the phone book. The comedy club one counts towards discount but not toward class if you got a speeding ticket.

I found i need to quite my job. I get stresed and start driving a bit too defensive. A class on staying awake would be nice. I keep mints in my center console for that reason.

At most times i drive how most seem to try to drive. I know where all traffic is and how fast they are going. I know where i can turn and when i can't. If someone cuts me off i already have a place i can go. I see see mistakes that cause traffic from far away.

I think our biggest problem is highways. We should either have license for them ( would get a lot of bad drivers off the highway and raise a lot of funds ) or we should have a speed meter to tell people how fast traffic is moving. Some seem to think that low speeds are good for merging. sure.. you can speed up after a car almost rear ends you.. but then the traffic for the next hour is backing up in that spot because someone destroyed the flow of traffic.

our highways have issues.. i wish i could employ some simple laws. maybe not highway license or merge speed. there are many others though.

lol being law enforcement I have to keep telling my wife - Speeding is speeding it does not matter if you are keeping with traffic (just means everyone is speeding). Two tickets it has not sunk in but now driving her Prius around she has been easier on the petal as we now have a running contest to see who can get the better MPG in the house. :D Now if I can get her to lay off the horn.

They should be giving you an anti-theft discount. I have Progressive, and I have that discount. They can determine alot from the VIN.

But you still got a good rate for a 26M with one point. I'm paying $480/6mo down from $710 after my accident 3 years ago was dropped from my record.

really? i called them last week asking what they could do for me as far as my antitheft system, and they said nothing.

    hmph.

do you go through progressive direct?

also it may be a state-to-state difference... insurance rates here in carolina are much higher than in my native wisconsin

Just called since I'm jealous of that antitheft discount... They still said they don't have a discount. That is why I don't like them. Grr. But they still give a better rate and I'm motivated more by financial reasons than anything right now.

He had 10 points on his license until a week ago... you wouldn't believe our quote. Fortunately we only paid for 8 days of insurance before the rate dropped. $1800/6mo!! Ouch! That's up there with what the car payment costs... Our total premium for both cars is now about $710.

There is different amounts you can get for Anti-theft but it will max out at some point. For me I get a discount for the alarm and an additional discount for the kil switch. I could get more for window etching or GPS tracking but not enough to off-set the initial cost due to the anti-theft discount cap.

I've been with Allstate for well over 20 years, and I doubt I'll change now that they do my house too.

However, I'd like to see a SC-specific list of discounts to prove I'm getting everything I could. It's gone up this year from last, and after a year I expected a downward trend...
