13 mile trip 73.6 mpg They say im lying !

    no one believes i went 13 miles and got 73.6mpg my neighbor is paying more for gas than his monthly car payment u gotta luv it yippie yahooo !!!

    I believe you Larry. :D

    I have been in the 60's and even 70's after filling up when the car was already warm and doing some p&g. But I'm usually in the upper 40's or lower 50's after driving 350+ miles on a tank. Its a function of my commute (only 11 mi each way) and short weekend trips.

    I quite often drive customer cars home overnight in order to prove they are quite capable of high MPG. I travel 50 miles round trip and my record is 74.4 for that 50 miles.

    Good work Larry,
    I put a lengthy post here ... 3 times, describing high mpg's over a short range ... and how/why it happens, but the post won't take when I ad a picture from my MFd. Maybe I'll try later.

    I'm NOT loving the software migration here oh mighty moderaters.

    anywho, 13 miles over 4 bars ... that's 20 minutes ... 3 1/2 miles per hour. That's not quite hypermiling, but I'll give you a taste.

    I don't think you figured out the MPH right. 20 minutes is 1/3 of an hour, so you need to multiply the 20 minutes by 3 to get your hour (60 minutes). Therefore you also need to multiply the 13 miles by 3 which results in 39 MPH (probably mostly in electric, being under 40 MPH---which would explain the last 2 bars show'g 100 MPG).

    I believe you. I routinely get in the 70s after I fill up and drive straight home (10 mile trip). My problem is the time I go from home to work or work to home is about 13 mins. The 1st 5 min my mileage sucks. But I'm not complaining. The last 3 tanks where in the 58mpg range. What's cool is when during my trips to work I get my first segment at 35mpg (highway and warmup mode) and the next two segments at 100mpg!

    maybe when my Scan gauge comes in I can finally get better than 50mpg. Im at 3000 miles now so it should start to get better!

    Quite frankly, I could give one s*** if a pickup or suv driver doesn't believe my fuel economy reading. For that matter, if they want to delude themselves into beleiving they get "about 20" out of a Hemi pickup, great

    No, because he didn't GO a full hour ... and maybe the next 2/3 of an hour, he would have only been doing 30mpg ... so you only get what you get ... that's why it's kinda pointless to count what you get at the top of a hill. You want to average? Then realisticly, count at least a whole tank, or better yet, a whole YEAR ... not the few minutes that work the best.

    In my previous post I wasn't trying to refute anything about the mpG that 9G-man was getting. I was only commenting on your math that yielded the 3 1/2 mpH speed you came up with. If you assume that the 39 MPH conclusion I offered is correct, then if 9G-man is travelling for one hour, he will cover 39 miles. But he only drove for 1/3 of an hour [20 minutes (or 4 bars)] & therefore only covered 1/3 of the 39 miles he would have or 13 miles. The 39 MPH average he was likely doing vs. your 3 1/2 MPH wrong cunclusion is the only point I was trying to make.

    I once also had a problem over at PriusOnLine trying to get somebody to see that putting on larger tires (that he desired) than the car came with would add (in actuality) to his real MPG & his real speed although he would NOT see it on his speedometer or his consumption screen since those calculations are based on wheel revolutions on the axle [or more accurately the revolutions of the output shaft of the transmission (PSD)]. If the tire has a larger diameter then one revolution will cover a longer distance (circumference) than your older tire, so your greater distance covered will ACTUALLY increase your fuel economy MPG [although there's no way for you to see it on the screen because the calculations are based on axle (output shaft) revolutions times the number of circumferential inches moved per revolution of the original tire size]. And by the same token, since you are covering more distance in that same time period of that one wheel revolution, then your ACTUAL speed has increased too [although you won't see that on your speedometer either because again that calculation is based on axle (output shaft) RPM's times the distance your original tires would have covered at the same RPM's. If you're still turn'g the same RPM's, then with a bigger tire your speed will be higher & could get you a ticket. And if you vehemently argue you were doing the speed limit & question the accuracy of the officer's radar/laser, he could order you to get an expensive speedometer calibration [which may or may NOT pass, depend'g on how the check is done (comparing to factory bench check specs or to a 5th wheel on-the-road check like Consumer Reports or the car magazines do for their evaluations)]. If you do increase your tire size, I would just drive a little slower to avoid the chance of a ticket.

    I know this whole last paragraph went off topic, so I purposely left it as one paragraph to make it easier for anyone to ignore or skip over. Sorry!

    I can believe 70+ mpg, even as a new G1 Prius owner, especially with road conditions that allow for it. My wife was getting 60mpg in town almost right away, after reading some tips on how to drive the Prius.

    50-55 mpg on a 500 mile gas tank is easily doable during commuting hours.

    So 73mpg is certainly believable with some P&G over such a short distance.

    Indeed I believe you. My 2007 Prius was driven 31,000 over the past 12 months. It is driven to and from Palm Beach to DC once a month - 997 miles each way. The last 2 trips were 55 mpg and 58 mpg, all Interstate. ONLY mod is higher tire presure than reccomended - tires still look good. My best was a couple of trips to and from Ft Lauderdale and Palm beach - 72 -74 mpg (perfect conditions - about 65 degrees, flat and about 45 miles each way and about 53 mph.)

    BTW, during that 12 month period, I drove my monster 2007 Mercedes CL600 475 miles - that works out to about $2 a mile for the years insurance!

    Since I apparently have nothing else better to do at the time:)p), I thought I would give this thread a bump with an update. Back in June of '08, i completed an 18.6 mile course that was used for the CleanMPG.com World Fuel Economy Challenge at 136 mpg. I have also, on numerous occasions, achieved over 140 mpg on various segments around home of 10 miles or less. My records include 169 mpg on a 7 mile trip home from my bank. My absolute best segment ever was on a 6.4 mile trip home from McD's. I had force-charged the pack to 8 bars and the mpg was reading 227 mpg by the time I got home.:eek:
