I have a 2003 Prius w/o a CD player. We bought it new, and I'm absolutly tired of not having a CD player. I've installed one in the past (soon after we bought it), but it disabled the display. I would like to avoid this. I'm hoping something has come along. I know about coastaltech, and I've heard there is some "Y-adapter" that may do the trick. I don't care if I can't controll the cd player from the dash or anything. I just want it to work, and I would like to avoid an FM transmitter.

    my 2 cents

i do not know if buying the 2003 toyota cd player / changer would read mp3s... and it would cost like $125-$455 or more...

maybe its time to get an ipod. i think you can get a cheap ipod with toyota's or another manufacture's ipod interface (or an aux in if you want to go the cheap route) for a lot less money, and it would hold more music

in looking this up, it seemed that getting 2003 prius audio stuff is not as easy then
the more recent years., as far as the genuine toyota stuff goes

Just get a Y-adapter from Toyota. Its about $15 Canadian. It will plug into the back of your current unit (behind cassette player) and allow your CD player to funtion totally. Make sure you connect the correct sides together (two of the harness connectors are exactly the same) and it will cause your display to behave erratically. If this happens, simply reverse the connections and it will solve the issue. It happened to me when I put my dash together after installing the Toyota Navigation in my car. Scared the bejeezus out of me!

Welcome first-poster. I think that metro toyota/TPN would be able to provide the cable and either 1-cd or 6-cd changers. The (new) price for the players is quite high, so you might look for them on ebay or from salvage vehicle dismantlers instead.

It is not the same device as used in 2004 and newer Prius, so don't buy those.

Thanks, I'll look into metro toyota/TPN. I asked my dealer about it and they were clueless (as most are with the prius). It would be nice to install an aftermarket cd player. I have priced pioneer, kenwood, sony... Something with an aux in would be nice also. I'll have to see if i can splice into the "Y adapter" somehow.

I replaced my single disc changer from a 2001 Toyota Camry. Also look at 1998-2002 Corolla, Solara as well. They have the same single disc and changers as well as the Prius. However, the Y-adapter was mostly used on Japanese and European Toyota's. The Y adapter is available from Toyota, just ask for part number 08695-00370. I believe that should be it. Also included is a pic of precisely what it looks like for you. Let me know if you need anymore help. Here are some instructions for installation too. Refer to the picture for full understanding.

The plug part of the "Y" (left, top) goes into the Prius in-dash radio. The socket part of the "Y" (left, bottom) gets plugged into the R4 plug that you remove from the radio.

I purchased a factory cd player off Ebay for my 2002 Prius. I asked my local Toyota dealership to get the parts they needed for the install. When I took my car in to have it installed they did not have the right parts and told me they could not get them. So, I got on my pc and ordered part #08695-47020 for $33.75 from a Toyota dealership in TX. With those parts and the ones my local Toyota dealer ordered #08695-47800 for $49.95 they were able to install the factory cd player and every thing works just like it came from the factory. Hope this helps. Good luck!!!
