My '06 Prius is approaching its 36th month in service (fewer than 36,000 miles) and I have a question regarding extended warranty coverage. I'm a newcomer to PriusChat so please forgive me for asking about something that must already have been discussed here at great length.

I'd like to know just what an extended warranty would cover. The Warranty Information booklet that came with the car seems to indicate that all the major components (hybrid system including battery, powertrain including engine and restraint system) that would be very expensive to repair are covered for 60 or 96 months. What other expenses (other than tires, normal wear and tear, routine maintenance, etc.) might I encounter that would be covered if I purchased an extended warranty?

Any information about this would be greatly appreciated.

If you go to www.toyota.com it will tell you all about the extended warranty. If you got any questions give Troy a call. Look for his info under the Extended warranty thread, he's the guy that gives us a great deal on the extened warranty thru prius chat.

    1. Here's a link to what's included (note that you'll have to use the drop down menu to show the covered components in the different systems of the car):

    Toyota Financial Services: Home

    2. And here's a prior post of mine regarding, among other things, what's excluded from the Platinum Plan:

    3. And I think these are the phone numbers for Troy:

    Direct Dial # (413) 772-0989
    General Office # (413) 772-0231

I have a stupid question...that exclusion list looks to be most of the rest of the car besides the hybrid system. I was lead to believe it extended the original warranty. That doesn't look like it to me.

    Look again.

Notice that it doesn't exclude lots of important systems or important components thereof, like:

    Airconditioning/Heating
    Automatic Transmission
    Axle Assembly
    Certain Brake Parts
    Computers & Electronics
    Cooling System
    Electrical
    Engine
    Fuel System
    Steering
    Certain Hybrid Components
    Suspension
Additional Components (e.g., locks, seat belts)

For more detail as to what is expressly included, see this link that I had previously posted (note that you'll have to use the drop down menu to show the covered components in the different systems of the car):

    Toyota Financial Services: Home

Troy is a GREAT guy. In fact, we even bought our hybrid Lexus SUV warranty from them. FWIW, sellers of warranties (service contracts, basically) will let you buy as much or as little as you think you want/need. We got the "bumper-to-bumper" type but if you're short on cash, & want to skrimp, you can get just the power train from some sellers.

Thanks for that link, Tom. Hard to believe how much is involved in these vehicles! I was relieved to see all the lists of covered items. What awesome little cars! :D

    Blueberry and paprius4030,

I think your points, express or implied, are good ones.

That is, you've raised the question of whether it is worthwhile to get the extended warranty, considering (1) the "hybrid system" is warrantied for 96 months*, and (2) the power train (engine and transmission) is warrantied for 60 months; and considering further (3) the Prius has the best or near best reliability/frequency of repair record as reported by readers of Consumer Reports, and (4) it's a Toyota.

Personally, I think that the Platinum Plan for $1055 is a good insurance buy. But I wouldn't buy it at its MSRP of $1850 (and certainly not at the $2500 my dealer tried to scam me for).
    __________

    * Hybrid-Related Component Coverage: Certain hybrid-related components, including the Hybrid Vehicle Battery, battery control module, hybrid control module and inverter with converter, are covered for 96 months/100,000 miles. The Hybrid Vehicle Battery may have longer coverage under emissions warranty.

Longer California Emission Control/Hybrid Vehicle Battery Coverage: In California and any other state that adopts California emission warranty provisions, the emission control defect and performance warranty is 160 months/150,000 miles, and the Hybrid Vehicle Battery is warranted for 120 months/150,000 miles.

Refer to your Owner's Warranty Information booklet for details.

Yesterday i got a pre-owned Prius with 28,000 miles on it. I got it from a small used car dealer who advertised on Craig's list. The dealer gave me a document stating that the car is still under the factory warranty.

The car came with an abundance of documentation, the user manuals, pocket reference guides, something about a dispute resolution process ?, tire documents, and lots more stuff. One of the things that came with it was a booklet on the warranty, and there was another booklet about an extended warranty. Reading it, i see that the original owner, who owned it until some time in the past few weeks or months had the Toyota Platinum extended warranty on the car. It says that the extended warranty is tranferable under certain conditions., one of which is that the original owner has to sign on this line that's in the warranty document.

I have the previous owner's address in the documentation. I also had lots more detailed info about him, including the cell number, but i deleted all of that stuff from the GPS when i was setting it up with my info, before i saw the stuff about the extended warranty.

I'm wondering, would it be possible for the previous owner to sign off on transferring the extended warranty even though i didn't buy the car from him? I could write him a letter and ask if he would do that.

My previous car, a 93 Accord SE, came with an extended warranty. I bought it from a guy who i think would be called a broker, he wasn't the owner who's name the extended warranty was in. i think it wasn't a Honda warranty, i think it was a third party one. I made one or two claims with it, to repair a problem with the stereo speakers or connections, and it went smoothly, i didn't have to pay anything, the Honda service agency just billed them and that was the last i heard of it. That car had 80,000 miles on it when i got it and the warranty was still good for another year and a half. I didn't need to use it again, it's been an excellent car.

I'm wondering whether the circumstances of how i came to own the Prius would allow the transfer of the platinum warranty.

Another extended warranty question--i read Danny's 2004 post about the subject. It said if you buy the car used, you need to get a different kind of warranty, not from Toyota? Is that right? I thought that as long as it was under 3 yrs/36K miles, it would qualify regardless.

The dealer i bought the car from said he would sell my an extended warranty. I was given a brochure. The company is Prizm.

jaw444, the previous owner may have cancelled the extended warranty to receive a prorated refund as it wouldn't have been transferrable to a dealer. Perhaps you could call a dealer or Toyota to determine the status of the extended warranty.

How many people on this site bought an extended warrenty for their new Prius? My dealerhip told me 96 percent of hybrid owners buy a vehicle service plan, but I'm guessing most of those are people who buy Fords or GM hybreds. ??

I orginally agreed to buy 7 years or 70,000 miles from the Landcar (a.k.a., Larry Miller who also owns 42 dealerships including the one I bought my Prius from) because I was worried about potential high repair costs. However, after reading posts on this site and talking to people who own Toyotas, I went back and canceled it.

    Feedback please.
